The NAACP Image Awards has announced its third round of winners in non-televised categories, such as outstanding writing in a comedy series, writing in a drama series, outstanding documentary and breakthrough creatives.
The Color Purple director Blitz Bazawule won the latter award for the film category, while Survival of the Thickest star and co-creator Michelle Buteau was named the breakthrough creative in television.
Wednesday’s winners also include Michael B. Jordan for his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, while Allen Hughes took the price for directing the FX/Hulu docuseries Dear Mama about Tupac and Afeni Shakur.
Netflix’s High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America won the prize for outstanding documentary series, while Magnolia Pictures’ Invisible Beauty won the award for outstanding documentary.
Bazawule’s The Color Purple and Jordan’s Creed III also took prizes for outstanding ensemble cast and stunt ensemble, respectively.
NAACP honored winners in non-televised Image Awards categories in virtual ceremonies this week and will continue recognizing winners at an awards dinner and program on March 14, as well as a fashion show on March 15. The awards dinner will be hosted by Sherri Shepherd and honor Frankie Beverly with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The fashion show will be hosted by Brandee Evans and honor June Ambrose with the NAACP Vanguard Award for Fashion.
On Saturday, the 55th NAACP Image Awards will air live at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET and CBS with Queen Latifah hosting.
