Early box office projections for Sony Pictures‘ Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire are looking to keep pace with its predecessor, according to a recent report from Variety.

As of now, Frozen Empire is looking to earn somewhere between $43-45 million from around 4,300 theaters in its domestic box office debut.

Should it reach that mark, it would match the start of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which opened to $44 million three years ago.

Afterlife ended up taking home a total of $129.3 million in North America and $204 million worldwide, a total that Frozen Empire will likely need to pass in order to be considered successful due to its $100 million.

What will Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire be about?

“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level,” reads the official synopsis. “But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.”

The latest installment to the horror comedy franchise is directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House, City of Ember) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jason Reitman. The sequel stars Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O’Connor, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, and more.
