New York Governor Kathy Hochul has addressed the recent earthquake that rattled the Northeast, describing it as “one of the largest earthquakes on the east coast to occur in the last century.”
Following the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the New York City area this Friday morning, Governor Hochul held a press conference to provide updates.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Lebanon, New Jersey, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Governor Hochul stated that the earthquake was felt across the state and her team is currently assessing any impacts or damages that may have occurred. She noted that regular updates will be shared with the public throughout the day via social media channels.

Despite the significant tremors, the New York City Fire Department has reported no damage at this time. Reports indicate that several buildings and homes experienced shaking as a result of the earthquake.
With a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 and starting at 10:23 a.m., the earthquake originated in Lebanon, New Jersey, approximately 50 miles west of New York City. The seismic activity was felt not only in the five boroughs but also throughout the state, marking the first earthquake of this scale in New York City in 13 years.
The USGS received over 120,000 responses through its “Did You Feel It?” tool, with many reports coming from densely populated areas such as New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia. An estimated 42 million people experienced the earthquake, with its effects reaching as far south as the D.C. area and as far north as the New York-Canada border. The shaking lasted for several seconds, leaving a significant impact on millions across the region.
Following the quake, Us President Joe Biden spoke with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, CNN quoted the White House as saying. “The President said his Administration is in touch with state and local officials and will provide assistance if needed.
Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams, said, “Earthquakes don’t happen every day in New York.” He added, “You’re always concerned about aftershocks after an earthquake,” Adams said, “but New Yorkers should go about their normal day.”
