Duke is getting rid of its Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship Program which was a program made for “top applicants of African descent.” The decision comes after last year’s Supreme Court ruling that ended race-based affirmative action in college admissions.

The Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship Program was a prestigious scholarship opportunity that honored the legacy of Reginaldo Howard, a trailblazer in the field of education and a dedicated advocate for social justice. This scholarship program was established to support students who were committed to making a positive impact in their communities and who demonstrates academic excellence, leadership potential, and a strong passion for social change.

“It is very much disheartening to hear that this program that opened the door for me to come to Duke is now being closed essentially, even though it will take on a new form,” junior Mya Harris said. The university will be replacing it with a new program that will be open to all undergraduate students, regardless of race, and will “not include a competitive selection process.”

“The Reginaldo Howard Leadership Program will honor Reggie Howard’s legacy by supporting Black academic excellence, intellectual community and leadership on campus through an intentionally designed series of engagement opportunities,” wrote Candis Watts Smith, vice provost for undergraduate education, in the Tuesday email to Reggie Scholars and alumni.

The impact of the Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship Program is far-reaching, as it not only provided financial support to deserving students but also helped cultivate a new generation of leaders who were dedicated to creating positive change in their communities. By investing in the education and development of these students, the program bas helped to build a more inclusive and equitable society where all individuals have the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

In conclusion, the Reginaldo Howard Memorial Scholarship Program was a valuable opportunity for students who were passionate about social justice and committed to making a difference in their communities. Though the program is gone, the legacy of Reginaldo Howard lives on, inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams and work towards a more just and equitable world.
