EXCLUSIVE: Rotterdam competition title Small Hours of the Night from Daniel Hui (Demons, Snakeskin) and SXSW premiere Adrianne & The Castle by Shannon Walsh (The Gig is Up, Illusions of Control) have landed international reputation via non-fiction agency Indox.
Launched by former Dogwoof exec Luke Brawley, Indox provides international festival management for non-fiction projects. The company is entirely independent and run solely by Brawley, who will be on the ground at Cannes, Sheffield DocFest, and Docs Ireland, where he will present the two films to programmers and producers.
Hui’s experimental docu-fiction Small Hours of the Night premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival in January, before moving on to its North American premiere at Doc Fortnight in February. Shot on 16mm in crisp black and white, and primarily confined within the walls of a claustrophobic interrogation chamber, Hui’s Small Hours of the Night is described as a captivating blend of docu-fiction and hybrid storytelling. Through a weaving non-linear narrative, the film delves into the often neglected and intricate political past of Singapore, shedding light on its complexities and violence. The film is produced by Bee Thiam Tan via Hui’s production house 13 Little Pictures based in Singapore.
Walsh’s whimsical love story Adrianne & The Castle, produced by Ina Fichman (Fire of Love, Stray), debuted at SXSW in March and will be opening DOXA Film Festival in May as well as playing Hot Docs and BAFIC. Intricately weaving together elements of musical, fantastical love story, and hybrid vision, the pic explores the tale of author Alan St-George and his relationship with his late partner, Adrianne. The synopsis reads: Even in her absence, Adrianne’s presence resonates in Alan’s life, embodied by the castle they built together—a shrine to their enduring love. Alan, still coming to terms with Adrianne’s loss, partners with Walsh to relive past significant moments and find new perspectives on their life together. The film is produced by Ina Fichman for Canadian outfit Intuitive Pictures.
“Both Daniel and Shannon’s works are daring, unique, and exciting examples of non-fiction that fit perfectly within the Indox family,” Brawley said.
“We always strive to work with titles that push boundaries of the form and are truly excited to share the films with the world.” Brawley will be attending Cannes, Sheffield DocFest & Docs Ireland in person, and will be taking meetings with programmers as well as producers.”
