I’ve been excitedly curious about M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming thriller Trap. I liked the trailer that was released for the film but was surprised that it revealed a big twist of the story.
Trap follows a father and daughter, played by Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue, as they attend a concert by pop sensation Lady Raven, but this isn’t any regular concert.
It’s revealed that the concert is a trap that was set up to catch a serial killer known as “The Butcher.” As the trailer goes on we learn that Hartnett’s character is The Butcher, and he’s now in a pickle where he has to figure out how to escape this elaborate trap that’s been set for him.
It’s safe to say that this big reveal in the trailer isn’t the big twist of the film. There’s something else at play here, and CinemaBlend recently shared a theory on what that twist might be, and I had to relay it, because I love it, and I hope it’s true!
Well, it’s presented that Trap could be a secret sequel to M. Night Syamalan’s classic film The Sixth Sense, in the same way that Split was a secret sequel to Unbreakable.
One thing that I wondered while watching the trailer, is how do the cops know that The Butcher would attend this concert if they set it up for him? If they knew who he was, why wouldn’t they just arrest him?
So what could the connection be between Trap and The Sixth Sense? The theory is that it’s Cole Sear, Haley Joel Osment’s character from The Sixth Sense, the kid who sees ghosts.
What if the cops are getting all of the information from Cole, who is in turn communicating with The Butcher’s murdered victims?
The theory is, “Cole, now an adult, uses his supernatural abilities to assist law enforcement in tracking down serial killers before they can strike again… Perhaps Cole is helping the spirit of one of “The Butcher’s” victims, guiding them toward resolution and peace.”
I have no idea if this is how things will play out in the movie, but even if it doesn’t I actually wouldn’t mind seeing a film that follows an adult version of Cole using his supernatural abilities to help people as an adult.
