BBC and Fable Pictures are set to produce a new drama series, “Mr Loverman”, based on Bernardine Evaristo’s celebrated 2013 novel. The eight-part series will air on BBC One and iPlayer, featuring Lennie James in the lead role as Barrington Jedidiah Walker. Nathaniel Price will adapt the series for television, with filming due to commence later in the year. Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution.
“Mr Loverman” tells a life-affirming story centered around family, love, and authenticity. The protagonist, Barrington, known as Barry, is a lively 70-year-old man with a taste for retro suits. His wife of 50 years, Carmel, suspects he’s been unfaithful with other women, oblivious to Barry’s decades-long passionate affair with his best friend, Morris. As Barry embarks on the next phase of his life, he must make challenging choices that will compel his family to re-evaluate their own futures.
The series offers an insightful portrayal of a family while exploring aspirations, regrets, parenthood, and societal expectations around sexuality and love. Bernardine Evaristo, Lennie James, and Nathaniel Price have expressed their excitement and eagerness for the project. Faye Ward will executive produce the series for Fable Pictures alongside Hannah Farrell, Hannah Price, and Jo McClellan for BBC. Hong Khaou will direct the series.
