From Buffaloed to Not Okay, Zoey Deutch has a talent for bringing some of the quirkiest characters to life in a shockingly grounded and convincing way, and Flower is no different. The film follows her character, Erica, as she scams men for money to save up enough cash to bail her father out of jail. The two get soon caught up in an outlandish and dangerous scheme that will see their bond tested. Flower is bold and risky with a tone like no other, and it’s especially fun to see Adam Scott playing against type and an always pitch-perfect Kathryn Hahn as Erica’s mother. — Taylor Gates

It begins with a mesmerizing Mads Mikkelsen as Martin who has an otherwise normal life as a teacher. However, Martin is unhappy and looking for something more. That is when he joins his other friends and fellow teachers in drinking all the time as a test to see how it will impact their lives. It is a sweet portrait of friendship that also becomes a somber experience as their lives begin to unravel as they push themselves too far. It is another outstanding film that unites Mikkelsen and writer-director Thomas Vinterberg, who previously collaborated on the haunting film The Hunt. However, this one also sees Mikkelsen do an impressive and cathartic dance sequence, which makes it a must-see on its own. – Chase Hutchinson

Babyteeth
Director Shannon Murphy
Release Date 2020-07-19
Cast Michelle Lotters, Eliza Scanlen, Toby Wallace
Genres Comedy, Drama, Music
If you want to laugh and cry in equal measure, you can’t go wrong with Shannon Murphy’s astounding directorial debut Babyteeth. Even if you’re sick of the cancer dramedy subgenre that’s grown popular in independent films, Babyteeth’s cast of characters are so quirky that even the most gut-wrenching moments are still darkly amusing. Sharp Objects and Little Women breakout star Eliza Scanlen delivers another stunning performance as Milla Finlay, a teenage girl diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her idiosyncratic family comes together to offer support, even when she starts dating her drug dealer Moses (Toby Wallace). Ben Mendelsohn’s amazing mustache is worth some sort of special award. -Liam Gaughan
I, Tonya
Director Craig Gillespie
Release Date 2018-01-19
Cast Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney, Julianne Nicholson, Paul Walter Hauser, Bobby Cannavale
Genres Biography, Documentary
I, Tonya is more than just a “ripped from the headlines” straight adaptation of one of the most infamous true-crime scandals of the 1990s — it’s a surprisingly sensitive examination of the way abuse is chronicled in the media, particularly in a high-profile case involving celebrity figures. Margot Robbie delivers the best performance of her career as the titular Tonya Harding, and Allison Janney won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her richly amusing role as Harding’s villainous mother. The film was also a breakout for actor Paul Walter Hauser, who co-stars as Jeff Gillooly’s self-delusional partner-in-crime Shawn Eckhart. -Liam Gaughan

The King’s Man
Director Matthew Vaughn
Release Date 2021-12-22
Cast Gemma Arterton, Daniel Brühl, Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Matthew Goode, Stanley Tucci
Genres Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Superhero
While the first two films in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman franchise were eccentric parodies of the espionage genre, the 2021 prequel takes things slightly more seriously. The 2021 prequel tracks the origins of the British spy agency through the eyes of a father and son, Orlando (Ralph Fiennes) and Conrad (Harris Dickinson) Oxford. There’s certainly enough humor to label The King’s Man as an “action-comedy,” but Vaughn manages to ground even the wildest moments with a bit of heart. Stick around for what may be one of the weirdest post-credit scenes in film history. -Liam Gaughan
Happiest Season
Director Clea DuVall
Release Date 2020-11-25
Cast Alison Brie, Mackenzie Davis, Kristen Stewart, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Mary Steenburgen
Genres Drama
For a lot of people, the holidays are all about heading home and reuniting with loved ones. But, Happiest Season serves as a reminder–and even a cautionary tale–that visiting family might not be the most relaxing endeavor. It definitely isn’t fun for Harper (Mackenzie Davis) who, despite being in a loving relationship with her girlfriend Abby (Kristen Stewart), is dreading Christmas with her family. Unbeknownst to Abby, Harper’s uptight family doesn’t know that Harper is in a relationship or that she’s gay. Torn between wanting to spend Christmas with her girlfriend and having to be home for the holidays, Harper invites Abby to the big family Christmas party not as her date, but as her orphaned roommate. Will the couple come out of this situation alive, and will Harper’s family uncover their secret? This sharp festive dramedy emphasizes the power of acceptance and is sure to deliver laughs year-round. — Emily Bernard
Big Time Adolescence
Director Jason Orley
Release Date 2020-03-13
Cast Pete Davidson, Griffin Gluck, Sydney Sweeney, Jon Cryer, Machine Gun Kelly, Thomas Barbusca
Genres Comedy, Drama
A coming of age film that shows Pete Davidson has some good acting chops when paired with a solid director in Jason Orley, Big Time Adolescence is all about the pitfalls of youth and what happens when you outgrow those that you once looked up to. It is centered around Griffin Gluck as Monroe, a young kid who looks up to Davidson’s Zeke despite him being the last person you would think of as being a good role model. There are a lot of expected jokes and gags that one would expect. However, there is a deeper aspect to the film that sneaks up on you as we become increasingly disillusioned with the laid back vibe of Zeke and the negative influence it has on those around him. The dialogue all feels natural and increasingly painful, making it a complicated comedy that becomes something more melancholic when you least expect it. — Chase Hutchinson
Plan B
Director Natalie Morales

Cast Kuhoo Verma, Victoria Moroles, Michael Provost, Mason Cook
Genres Comedy
The road trip buddy comedy Plan B follows ride-or-die friends Sunny (Kuhoo Verma) and Lupe (Victoria Moroles) on their journey to Planned Parenthood for emergency contraception. Unable to get Plan B from their local pharmacy thanks to South Dakota’s “conscious clause”, she recruits her sex-positive, down-for-anything best friend Lupe to go with her to the nearest Planned Parenthood in Rapid City. Not only do the friends have to contend with a closing window of viability for the pill, but they also have to make it back home before Sunny’s strict mom returns to town. Even though this raunchy comedy is absolutely created by and for women, there’s something for almost everyone in Sunny and Lupe’s journey. Plan B balances humorous and heartfelt moments effortlessly, with both emotions likely to leave you in tears. Add it to your watch list ASAP! — Brynna Arens
Palm Springs
Director Max Barbakow
Release Date 2020-07-10
Cast Tyler Hoechlin, Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons, Camila Mendes, Dale Dickey
Genres Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery
The romantic comedy Palm Springs is one of the best films of 2020 full-stop. The set-up is fairly simple – Andy Samberg and Cristin Millioti play strangers who meet at a wedding – but the execution is complicated and wonderful. You see, Samberg’s character has been stuck in a time loop for ages, reliving the same day over and over again. Complications arise when Millioti’s character gets sucked into the time loop as well, and a wonderfully hilarious, sweet, and introspective story ensues. This is one of the best romcoms in recent memory. – Adam Chitwood
