As the anticipation ramps up for Paramount’s latest venture, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Nickelodeon is furthering its foothold in the fan-favorite franchise. The network has announced its acquisition of the classic 1987 animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, created by Fred Wolf.
The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, consisting of a substantial 193 episodes, spanned almost a decade, as it aired between 1987 and 1996. The 22-minute episodes followed the exhilarating escapades of the iconic turtle quartet: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.
The upcoming release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is currently making waves at San Diego Comic-Con, with Paramount’s addition to the franchise scheduled to hit theaters on August 2. As fans wait for the debut of the original TMNT series on digital platforms and the theatrical release of Mutant Mayhem, it’s clear the heroes in a half-shell are here to stay.
Nickelodeon’s first-ever CG-animated theatrical production, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem features a star-studded cast of voice actors, led by Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo, Micah Abbey as Donatello, Brady Noon as Raphael and Jackie Chan as Splinter. The supporting cast also includes Ayo Edebiri as April O’Neil, Ice Cube as Superfly, Seth Rogen as Bebop, John Cena as Rocksteady, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, Natasia Demetriou as Wingnut, Rose Byrne as Leatherhead, Post Malone as Ray Fillet, Hannibal Buress as Genghis Frog, Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Ultrom and Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman.
What to expect from the TMNT movie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is being directed by Jeff Rowe, who previously worked on The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The script for Mutant Mayhem was written by Brendan O’Brien, with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver serving as producers via their Point Grey Productions banner.
The official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem synopsis teases that “after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”
