Shazam! Fury of the Gods was a disappointment for fans, critics, and Warner Bros. alike. However, the film’s star, Zachary Levi, has spoken out about the negative reviews, calling them “perplexingly low.”
The first Shazam! movie was a sleeper success for Warner Bros. and DC, leading many to suspect Fury of the Gods would be another quiet success. However, following PR nightmares with Black Adam, inflating budgets and poor reviews, the film became a box office bomb. Despite this, Shazam! star Zachary Levi says he enjoyed the project, despite not understanding the scores being so low:
“But listen, as an experience, I really enjoyed making that movie and I really enjoyed playing that part,” Levi told The FilmUp podcast. “I don’t know what the future holds for it all because, unfortunately, the second movie was not as well-received. I mean, the audience score is still quite good, but the critic score was, I don’t know, very oddly and perplexingly low and people were insanely unkind.”
It’s no secret that fans and critics alike are much harder on superhero films than they used to be, with almost every big seasonal blockbuster coming from Marvel Studios or the DC Universe. However, given how badly Shazam! Fury of the Gods underperformed given its inflated budget, it’s likely unkind reviews aren’t entirely to blame.
The one thing Zachary Levi is right about, however, is that his future as Shazam remains unsure as DC goes into its newest rebrand with James Gunn and Peter Safran. The soft reboot has left the fate of many of DC’s “old guard” up in the air.
David F. Sandberg directed Shazam! Fury of the Gods from a script written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, D.J. Cotrona, Grace Caroline Currey, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Millans, Cooper Andrews, Djimon Hounsou, Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren.
The official Shazam! Fury of the Gods synopsis reads as follows: “Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.”
