That’s where they found a third dog, severely weakened and alone. Officers named her Miracle.
“This morning, Walker County Animal Control officers responded to a heartbreaking call, a call that our animal control officers are unfortunately far too familiar with,” the department wrote in a March 29 Facebook post. “Severely emaciated, Miracle had crawled into a small drainage pipe—likely scared, weak, and searching for shelter after being left behind.”
The department described the effort to free her: “Our animal control officers worked diligently, carefully, and patiently to safely rescue her from the pipe.”

Walker County Animal Control Director Tyler Bishop and his team knew they had no time to waste after freeing Miracle from the drainage pipe. The severely emaciated dog was rushed to a local veterinarian, where she weighed in at only 10 lbs — a number that pointed to an extended period without food. Officers did not know how long Miracle had gone without eating, but her condition demanded immediate action. Bishop provided additional details about the rescue to FOX Chattanooga.
“She most likely crawled in there to get out of the elements, and while she was under there, became more weak, and especially without food for an extended period of time. We’re not sure how long she’d been without food. We were able to safely get her out to safety, and then immediately rushed her to a local vet where she could get the proper treatment she needed,” Bishop said.
Criminal Charges Were Filed in Walker County Cemetery Dog Abandonment Case
The rescue was only the first step for Walker County Animal Control officers. After bringing Miracle and the two other dogs to safety, officers located the animals’ owners. All three dogs were surrendered to Walker County Animal Shelter.
According to an update on the department’s Facebook post, criminal charges were obtained for animal cruelty and abandonment. The department noted the investigation is ongoing — a significant outcome in a county where this secluded cemetery has become a repeat location for animal abandonment. The identity of the owners has not been made public as of publication.
