Fans have already bought their tickets to watch Blue Beetle when it debuts this weekend. However, director Angel Manuel Soto teases that they will need multiple viewings to catch everything, confirming a Green Lantern easter egg and teasing the debut of Black Beetle.
There’s an entire industry online of creators picking apart easter eggs in comic book movies, so it’s no shock that Blue Beetle would also have its fair share. It seems as though references to Man of Steel won’t be the only element connecting the film to the broader DC Universe, with director Angel Manuel Soto confirming a Green Lantern’s presence in the movie:
“There are a lot of Easter Eggs. I always say, if you watch it a second time, or even three times, you’re gonna find different Easter Eggs every single time, because they’re very minimal,” the director told a Heroic Hollywood reporter before adding, “Do you notice the green beam in the title sequence? That’s the Green Lantern. See? You’ll have to see it again!”
A Green Lantern isn’t the only cosmic part of the DC Universe that Angel Manuel Soto teased for Blue Beetle. While speaking to one of our reporters, Angel Manuel Soto teased one of Jaime Reyes’ most iconic villains may show up in the future, stating “Get ready for Black Beetle.”
For those unaware, Black Beetle is a moniker held by several villains from Blue Beetle media. The first was an unnamed villain from the future using a scarab also made by The Reach, the alien species which created the Khaji Da scarab wielded by Jaime Reyes. The scarab was also used by Jaime’s friend Paco Testas in the comics and an unnamed Reach warrior in Young Justice. It’s unclear which approach Angel Manuel Soto will take in future films, but it’ll certainly be a delight for fans.
Who is DC’s Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle is one of DC’s lesser-known heroes, but he has a dedicated fanbase nonetheless. Created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski, Blue Beetle has gone through several iterations over the years. The Jaime Reyes version of the character was introduced during the events of 2006’s Infinite Crisis and quickly became a fan-favorite.
In the pages of DC Comics, Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas. Jaime discovers a scarab beetle-shaped device that bonds with his body, giving him access to an advanced suit of armor and various powers. He becomes the latest in a long line of Blue Beetles and must learn to balance his newfound abilities with his everyday life.
Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The full cast of the movie also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillén.
