While appearing on the @breakfastclubam to talk about his new music, Tyrese Gibson took a trip down memory lane to discuss his past relationships as well as some of his lowest moments in his life.
As many can recall, a couple of years ago Tyrese went through an intense custody battle with ex-wife Norma Mitchell. It was an extremely hard time for the star who was even prescribed Rexulti, a medication used to treat major depressive disorder in adults. The actor previously explained that he was taking the medication after losing custody of his and Mitchell’s daughter, Shayla.
Around that time in 2017, the R&B star shockingly announced that Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith had given him a huge sum of money to cover legal fees in his custody battle. A close source to the famous couple later denied those claims and said they were worried he was having “some sort of a breakdown.” They were right and it’s something that Gibson regrets saying to this day. While speaking to the radio show hosts, Gibson said of that moment, “Everybody clearly could see something was going on. Something’s happening,” he said while mentioning his viral “What more do you want for me,” and “congratulations” videos. Tyrese went on to say that when “you’re out of your mind,” it leads to stuff like that. However, he’s currently on an “apology tour for the damage that I caused.”
“The whole Smith family woke up to all the energy that they did. Like of all people in my life… You know how public I’ve been about how Will Smith has changed my life… that’s the last person that should’ve woke up to all this energy.” He continued, “It was all kind of shit that was happening.”

Gibson went on to say that as a person who does not drink or smoke, he simply had a bad reaction to his medication… “which played out for the world to see.” He added, “ I have a 12-minute on the internet that I never knew I filmed… That was uploaded and was on the internet for three straight months.” He continued, “I was a meme and got the ugliest crying faces of all time. It became the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to me… ever! and I didn’t even know I did it.”
Despite Mitchell being granted custody of their child at the time; after she accused Tyrese of physically abusing Shayla; Tyrese, who denied Mitchell’s allegations, eventually had the case dropped following an investigation by child service officials.
