Is Selling The OC Scripted? (Are Tyler, Austin & Alexandra Faking It?)

The show features agents from real estate brokerage firm The Oppenheim Group navigating everyday real estate challenges. The first two seasons are a must-watch as they feature memorable incidents like friendly feuds, blowout fights, love drama, and more. One of the most notable moments comes from season 2, where best friend duo Alexandra Jarvis and Alexandra Rose fell out after a heated argument.

Selling The OC is known for its moments that make it stand out from its predecessor, Selling Sunset. One of those moments was when Tyler Stanaland confessed his interest in Alex Hall at Polly Brindle’s birthday party; this was completely unexpected. Another shocking moment came in Selling The OC season 2, where Ali Harper dared Gio Helou to catwalk in a tight bikini after her first successful sale. One segment between Kayla Cardona and Sean Palmieri showed the objects around their table changing between cuts. The beverages kept appearing and disappearing, a clear example of their scene not being seamless. Something similar happened in a scene between Alex and Polly when they discussed her kiss with Tyler.

The Drama’s Popping Offscreen Too

Apart from dodgy editing, there are also signs the drama isn’t totally real. One example is Tyler’s public flirting with Alex, Polly, and Kayla in both seasons. It seemed like he was portraying a character to create drama while continuing his real-life marriage with Brittany Snow, his ex-wife. Tyler and Brittany have recently divorced, and Brittany didn’t imply the reason was infidelity. She said (via Stylecaster), “this decision was made with love and mutual respect for one another.” Viewers also question when Ali (a model and Miss Tennessee winner) got hired by the agency without a license. Someone commented on Twitter (via @BeeBabs), “this is all very fake.”

What The Cast Has Said About Their Storylines

Previously, Jason Oppenheim claimed that the scenes are timed for cameras but aren’t part of a script. He said (via Pop Buzz), “in some situations, if some things need to be addressed or we’re meeting a client or something, we’ll be asked to wait to make sure if we get everything on camera.” Jason shared that none of the real estate agents follow a script. In comparison, Christine Quinn from Selling Sunset has claimed her show forged “fake” storylines. The contrasting views from cast members make it hard to figure out if the show is real or fake. However, Selling The OC is likely somewhere in between, similar to other reality TV shows.
