Legendary basketball star Michael Jordan has achieved yet another remarkable milestone. According to Justin Birnbaum of Forbes, Jordan has become the first athlete to secure a spot among the United States’ 400 wealthiest people on the esteemed Forbes 400 list!
The former Chicago Bulls great raked in $94 million and was the league’s highest-paid player in 1997 and 1998, but some of his biggest earnings come from off the court. One of the key factors contributing to Jordan’s inclusion on this prestigious list is his recent sale of the Charlotte Hornets, a team he had acquired in 2010. This transaction not only solidified his financial standing but also showcased his astute business acumen. Birnbaum also noted he earned approximately $2.4 billion (pre-tax) through partnerships with Nike, Gatorade, McDonald’s, Hanes, and more.
With a net worth that now sits an astonishing $3 billion, Michael Jordan’s extraordinary journey from being a sports icon to becoming one of America’s wealthiest individuals is truly awe-inspiring. Jordan has not yet released a statement on the great news. However, Ted Leonsis, who is the Washington Wizards, Mystics, and Capitals owner, who has partnered with Jordan on several past investments said,
“A lot of entrepreneurs, they make it once. They have a big win, take their winnings, retire, and [we] never hear from them again, or they try something a second time and it doesn’t work. He’s had three mega successes,”
As great as this is, Mike isn’t the only athlete part of the billionaires club. LeBron James and Tiger Woods have crossed the billionaire threshold, Birnbaum noted. Although they still have some earnings to do to catch up to Jordan on that Forbes list, it’s safe to say they’re already on the right track.

As for Mr. Jordan, he is likely going to keep earning money and maintaining his status among the country’s richest people as also retained a small stake in the Hornets. As the news site notes, he also cofounded Cup Series team 23XI Racing with Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin in NASCAR.
This groundbreaking accomplishment serves as an inspiration not only to aspiring athletes but also to anyone striving for success in their chosen field.
