Fans of Malcolm in the Middle might have to do a double take at a major cameo in the finale of the show’s four-part revival.
While discussing Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, all episodes of which are now available to stream on Hulu, creator Linwood Boomer revealed how “big fan” Finn Wolfhard‘s cameo happened.
“His agent called us and said, ‘Can Finn visit the set?’ We go, ‘Shit, yeah,’” recalled Boomer. “He loves the show, he’s such a big fan of the show, and we’re like, ‘Well, there’s a part we haven’t cast yet. Does he wanna do that? I mean, it’s a small part.’ And he said, ‘Fuck yeah, he wants to do it.’ And we were like, ‘Fuck yeah, we want you to come, that’d be awesome.’”
In Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Frankie Muniz reprises his once-angsty teenage character, who is now a father of his own. When his parents Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) demand his presence at their anniversary party, Malcolm is forced to stop avoiding his dysfunctional family while attempting to protect his daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten) from their chaotic dynamic.
Boomer’s executive producer wife Tracy Katsky said Wolfhard, who pops up in the final episode as the event planner Lois has hired for the occasion, was “an absolute doll” on set.

“He was so great. He’s so charming, It’s so fun to watch him do comedy,” she added. “He was so cute with Lois, Jane Kaczmarek. He was standing there and he kept forgetting to deliver his lines, because he was just so overwhelmed that Lois was screaming at him and he’d kind of go, ‘Oh wait, I have to act. OK, OK.’ It was so cute.”
Reacting to the Stranger Things alum’s fandom of Lois, Kaczmarek quipped, “I should have a phone line.”
“He’s a good actor on a great show and it was like, yeah, let’s include him,” said Cranston, noting they were just as starstruck.
“But I’m suddenly like, ‘Oh my God, that kid from Stranger Things is here. What’s he doing here?’” said Kaczmarek, as Cranston recalled wondering, “Is this an episode from Stranger Things?”
Wolfhard’s cameo comes after Stranger Things ended its five-season run on Netflix in December. The actor and producer can next be seen in Crash Land, which premiered at SXSW last month.
