The recent shooting incident that took place on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore has left five individuals wounded, according to officials. The incident occurred Tuesday night during the crowning of Mister and Miss Morgan State, and as of early Wednesday, no one has been taken into custody, as stated by Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.
The incident unfolded around 9:25 p.m. when campus police on patrol heard gunfire. From there, they found five victims, four men and one woman who ranged in age from 18 to 22. It was noted that four of the five are students at the university, campus Police Chief Lance Hatcher said. Following the shooting they were taken to a local hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries. Videos posted by other students online show the intense moments the Baltimore SWAT team tried to search for the gunman but came out empty-handed.
Around 11:45 p.m., city police tweeted that the incident was no longer an “active shooter situation.” University officials also tweeted, “The Shelter-in-Place order on campus has been lifted. All shuttle services have resumed. As more details become available, we will update our campus community via official University communication channels.”
Worley said officials decided to lift the warning after Baltimore Police’s SWAT team cleared a nearby building twice where police believed the suspect may have run or fired from. “They cleared every single floor twice,” Worley explained. “After that, we realized the campus was most likely safe and we opened it back up becuase the shooter was nowhere around that we could find.”

Morgan State President David Wilson said counselors will be deployed in-person to the Thurgood Marshall complex if needed by students. “Morgan State University will not be deterred,” Wilson added. “We will move forward, we will continue our momentum here at Morgan.”
Speaking on the situation, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott also said, “The entire city of Baltimore’s heart aches for the Morgan community, for the victims and their families and for our city as a whole.”
“We’re going to continue to be here to support Morgan State University,” he added, calling the school “Baltimore’s university” and a “jewel of a campus.” “We are going to be here to support this school and these families during this tragedy,” he said.
The university has since canceled all classes today. It was also said that the school’s administration will make decisions later Wednesday for the remaining homecoming events.
