It’s hard to wrap your head around it, but Star Wars has officially hit a massive milestone. As the production of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope turns 50, Mark Hamill is taking a moment to look back at the journey that launched him into pop culture history and changed movies forever, and even a Jedi legend can’t ignore what five decades feels like.

Speaking with USA Today, Hamill got real about the passage of time and what it’s like revisiting the earliest days of the galaxy far, far away.

“It doesn’t feel like 50 years, and it makes you feel old,” the actor shared. He admitted to going through the notes he made during the film’s production, which brought back many memories for him. “Time flies when you’re having fun!”

That mix of disbelief and nostalgia hits even harder when you remember Hamill was just 25 years old when he first stepped into Luke Skywalker’s boots. From farm boy on Tatooine to one of the most iconic heroes in cinema, his journey has been locked into the DNA of the franchise ever since.

Looking back also brought up some personal memories, especially involving his family during the original trilogy era. While working on Return of the Jedi, Hamill brought his first son, Nathan, to set, and it sounds like the kid had the ultimate VIP experience in the Star Wars universe.

“He could sit in Yoda’s house because he was little, [as he was] perfectly proportioned. He sat on the Emperor’s throne, he was in the creature shop, and they were letting him play with things.”

Not all of his kids connected with Star Wars the same way, though. Hamill shared that his son Griffin isn’t really into the saga, calling it “too commercial,” while his daughter Chelsea enjoys the films.

Over the years, Hamill hasn’t just revisited Luke Skywalker on screen. He’s voiced the character in animated projects and even returned in live-action form for modern entries, including appearances in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, thanks to some impressive de-aging tech.

But after decades with the character, Hamill is ready to step aside and let the franchise move forward. He said: “I had my time. I’m appreciative of that. I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”

His most recent turn as Luke came in Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, which now stands as his final performance in the role. Even so, he’s still closely tied to the brand.

Hamill recently teamed up with LEGO to promote a new line of Star Wars sets tied to the animated project. These new releases reportedly use LEGO’s SMART Play System, adding a more interactive layer to the building experience.

Fifty years later, Star Wars has become a generational phenomenon that keeps evolving, and while Hamill may be stepping away from Luke Skywalker, his legacy as the character isn’t going anywhere.
