WARNING! This article contains spoilers for Rick & Morty season 7, episode 2!

Summary

Rick and Morty season 7, episode 2 features a post-credits scene that brings back a long-forgotten character, Memory Rick, who is stuck in Jerry’s memory. This post-credits scene confirms that Memory Rick is still alive and well, even though he hasn’t been seen on the show in over two years. The post-credits scene takes place in the middle of the episode, offering a surreal and ridiculous standalone story that adds depth to the show’s lore.

Although Rick and Morty season 7, episode 2, “The Jerrick Trap,” waits until after the episode’s ending to revive a season 5 storyline, this post-credits stinger reveals that one long-forgotten character is still around. Even though most of Rick and Morty’s episodes feature relatively light-hearted, fast-paced comedic plots, the show’s canon can get pretty dense. More lore-heavy outings like Rick and Morty season 5, episode 8, “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort,” feature complicated concepts like Rick entering his friend’s mind and meeting a version of himself, Memory Rick, whose reality consists only of Rick’s memories. In Rick and Morty, this sort of trippy storytelling is par for the course.

However, that doesn’t mean that the show always wraps up these plots tidily. Some Rick and Morty characters have important arcs before being forgotten entirely, with others being ignored for multiple outings before making surprising comebacks. Additionally, some of these unresolved storylines aren’t even addressed directly within the episode’s plot, being unexpectedly saved for brief post-credits scenes instead. This happens to be the case for the post-credits scene of Rick and Morty season 7, episode 2, which brings back a memorable character who hasn’t been seen on the show in over two years.

Memory Rick Returns In Rick & Morty Season 7 Episode 2’s Post-Credits Scene

BP's memory of Rick saves Real Rick on Rick and Morty

In the post-credits scene of “The Jerrick Trap,” Memory Rick returns and is stuck in Jerry’s memory, trying to devise a way out of his future son-in-law’s mind. Like Rick and Morty season 7’s first post-credits scene, this moment was a goofy, surreal standalone story. Memory Rick snuck through decades of Jerry’s memories in search of something that he could use to build a portal out of his mind, only to discover that Jerry believed that all technology was powered by springs and cogs. This resulted in a dejected Memory Rick trying and failing to build something out of these springs and cogs, eventually taking his frustration out on Memory Gene.

The sequence was pretty ridiculous, but it did confirm something surprising about Rick and Morty’s lore. Since Memory Rick hadn’t been seen since he turned down Rick’s offer to become a real person at the end of Rick and Morty’s season 5 episode “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort,” viewers might reasonably have wondered whether the character even existed anymore. His return proved that he was alive and well or, at least, as alive as a sentient memory can be. Although Rick and Morty season 7 mocked one of the show’s most famous classic episodes already, this proves that the new season has some reverence for its predecessors.

When “The Jerrick Trap” Post-Credits Scene Takes Place Within The Episode

Strange as it might sound, the post-credits scene of “The Jerrick Trap” takes place in the middle of the episode’s chronological action, not at the end. In Rick and Morty season 7, episode 2’s ending, Rick and Jerry’s consciousnesses are separated again. However, the installment’s post-credits sequence takes place back when Memory Rick was still trapped in Jerry’s mind, meaning it occurs before the episode’s final scene. In contrast, Rick and Morty season 7, episode 1’s post-credits scene took place after the rest of the outing’s events ended.
