Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Loki season 2, episode 3, “1893”!

Summary

Despite General Dox’s efforts to prune timelines, the multiverse is still fracturing at a rapid rate, with new branches replacing the ones that were cut. The TVA is struggling to handle the expanding timeline branches caused by Sylvie’s actions, and Loki and Mobius are racing to find a solution to repair the Temporal Loom. While they have successfully retrieved a 19th-century Kang variant, it remains uncertain whether their efforts will be enough to prevent the collapse of the TVA, especially with the fractured state it’s already in.

With billions of lives already lost, Loki season 2, episode 3 director Kasra Farahani explains why the Sacred Timeline is still growing. Following the death of He Who Remains in the season 1 finale, the multiverse has been collapsing, with Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief and Owen Wilson’s Mobius racing against time to preserve the Temporal Loom that held the Sacred Timeline together with the help of Ke Huy Quan’s O.B. and Wunmi Mosaku’s B-15. Kate Dickie’s General Dox attempted to take manners into her own hands, gathering an army of hunters and pruning dozens of timelines behind the group’s back before they stop her with Sylvie’s help.

In honor of the recently released episode, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with Farahani to unpack some of the biggest reveals in Loki season 2, episode 3, “1893”. When asked about whether the growing branches were ones resistant to Dox’s pruning attempts or brand-new ones, the director explained it was “the latter”, confirming that many lives have been lost due to the General’s plans, but that the multiverse remains in a broken state. See what Farahani explained below:

It’s the latter. It’s the latter. It’s that Dox did cut, prune, those timelines end all those lives tragically, but the multiverse or the timeline rather, is fracturing at such a rate that they’re being replaced almost quicker than they were pruned in the first place. That’s the issue.

Will The TVA Survive The Various New Branches?

Loki season 2 episode 1 shows Loki in the future

Though the past two episodes have seen Loki and Mobius enjoy more time-traveling adventures, the stakes have remained high for them and the TVA as they have raced to both preserve the free will that the former sought to create in confronting He Who Remains in the season 1 finale. O.B. has frequently reminded the pair that the Temporal Loom was not designed to handle the expanding timeline branches that Sylvie’s killing of the Kang variant has sparked, with the TVA technician and fellow fan-favorite character, Eugene Cordero’s Casey, working together to try and find a workaround for this.

Their ultimate plan has been to track down Ravonna Renslayer and Miss Minutes to force the rogue AI to allow them to fix the Temporal Loom, which instead led Loki and Mobius to discovering Victor Timely, a 19th century Kang variant. The hope is to be able to use his temporal aura to repair the situation, though they have to combat with Ravonna and Miss Minutes’ varying plans for Timely, as well as the people the inventor has scammed in order to fund his various inventions.

The end of Loki season 2, episode 3 does conclude with them successfully bringing Timely back to the TVA, though the question remains whether their efforts will ultimately pay off in preventing the agency from collapsing. While technically being the founder of the TVA, Timely will still be faced with a lot of technology well ahead of his time and with the intensely fractured state it’s already in, it may be too late for them to fully fix the problem. Additionally, with Mobius having barely survived venturing out towards the Temporal Loom, it seems possible his delivery of his aura to the device could result in more catastrophic consequences.

New episodes of Loki season 2 air Thursdays on Disney+.
