1994 is one of history's greatest film years, and one of the contributors to that is Yimou Zhang's historical drama To Live (aka Huo zhe). It follows one Chinese family's journey through difficult times under Mao Zedong's rule. This didn't sit well with the country's authorities as they banned the director from making films for 5 years.
To Live has stellar cinematography, music and acting from the likes of Gong Li. It reminds me in some ways of Brazil's City of God, as these movies both portray painful lives and environments, while also capturing remarkable beauty and love.
If you'd be interested in a historical drama capturing some of China's history, or if you just love film, remember to watch this one some time if you haven't already.
