Summary

Big Mouth is a hilarious and relatable animated series that explores the wild and messy world of puberty through the eyes of middle schoolers. The show’s inclusive cast of diverse characters subverts expectations and tackles taboo topics, making it one of TV’s most inclusive shows. The voice cast includes talented actors like Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Maya Rudolph, and more, bringing the characters to life with their comedic flair.

With the show’s return to Netflix for its penultimate season, new viewers and long-time fans alike might be wondering about the enduring (and latest) members of the Big Mouth voice cast and characters. Co-created by Nick Kroll, Adam Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, the popular animated series centers on a group of middle schoolers and takes a look at all the highs and lows of the coming-of-age experience. Horrified, thrilled, and shocked at the changes that await them, the preteens navigate both awkward and raunchy situations, but Big Mouth makes it all as relatable as it is funny.

One of the show’s defining traits is its surrealistic approach to showing just how wild and messy the teenage mind is when puberty hits. In its earliest episodes, Big Mouth centers on best friends Nick Birch (Kroll) and Andrew Glouberman (John Mulaney) navigate their first sexual experiences and other puberty-related benchmarks, they’re pestered by their hormone monsters — entities that are responsible for the boys’ brooding (and often ill-timed) sexual desires. Although the upcoming release of Big Mouth season 8 marks the show’s final outing, the series will continue to inspire other raunchy, coming-of-age comedy series to come.

Big Mouth’s Main Characters

A scene from Big Mouth

With seven seasons under its belt, Big Mouth has evolved into an ensemble series that’s one of TV’s most inclusive shows. While a series that centers on hormone monsters and teens who are confronting their sexual desires for the first times seems like an unlikely venue for representation, Big Mouth has subverted expectations by tackling once-taboo topics as they relate to its diverse cast of characters. Despite the show’s ensemble approach, Big Mouth definitely has a few characters who feel more central to the series’ narrative than others.

Nick Kroll As Nick Birch & Maurice The Hormone Monster

Big Mouth Jessi Nick Judd

Big Mouth’s lead character, Nick struggles with his self-image and sexual urges and is voiced by the show’s co-creator Nick Kroll. Best known for starring in the fantasy football-themed series The League — and for his Comedy Central sketch program Kroll Show — Kroll has also lent his voice to films like Sausage Party and Sing. In Big Mouth, Kroll portrays a variety of characters, from Nick and Maurice the Hormone Monster to Coach Steve.

John Mulaney As Andrew Glouberman

Nick’s Jewish best friend, Andrew endures constant harassment from Maurice. Former Saturday Night Live writer and stand-up comic John Mulaney voices Andrew, along with the characters Babe the Blue Ox, Detective Florez, Grandpa Andrew, and Mint. Apart from his comedy projects, Mulaney is most well-known for his roles in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Documentary Now!, and The Bear.

Jessi Klein As Jessi Glaser

Big Mouth Jessi Everybody Bleeds

Big Mouth’s main female character is smart and sassy, but insecure about her body. Jessi is voiced by Jessi Klein. Although Klein has previously developed numerous popular series for Comedy Central, she’s most well-remembered for producing and writing for Inside Amy Schumer.

Jenny Slate (Seasons 1–4) & Ayo Edebiri (Season 4–Present) As Missy Foreman-Greenwald

While stand-up comedian Jenny Slate is perhaps best known for creating internet-sensation-turned-feature-film Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The actor also voiced Missy in the first four seasons of Big Mouth, but stepped down from the role after being called out for voicing a Black character. Since the end of season 4, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri has voiced Missy. Edebiri’s other writing and acting credits can be found in both TV and film, including projects like Dickinson, Bottoms, and Theater Camp.

Jason Mantzoukas as Jay Bilzerian

Jay in Big Mouth

A bisexual teenager, Jay Bilzerian struggles with his wants and needs. The character is voiced by Jason Mantzoukas, who’s appeared in just about every popular comedy series, from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The League to The Good Place. On the big screen, the actor appears in John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum.

Fred Armisen as Elliot Birch

Although he’s kind and well-intentioned, Nick’s father Elliot is always making things awkward, which makes Fred Armisen the perfect fit. Known for his work on Saturday Night Live and Portlandia, Armisen frequently crops up in guest spots, appearing in everything from Los Espookys to Broad City.

Maya Rudolph as Connie the Hormone Monstress

Throughout Big Mouth, Connie the Hormone Monstress shows up when big events happen in the lives of the series’ young women characters. She’s voiced by former SNL cast member Maya Rudolph, who also made a big splash in the Oscar-nominated Bridesmaids. On Big Mouth, Rudolph also voices Diane Birch, the Ghost of Elizabeth Taylor, and the Ghost of Whitney Houston.

Jordan Peele as the Ghost of Duke Ellington

Simply known as “Duke,” this Big Mouth character is trapped between heaven and hell, and remains at his location of death: Nick’s home. After becoming a household name thanks to his sketch series Key & Peele, the actor-turned-filmmaker cemented his place as horror’s go-to director with films like Get Out, Us, and Nope.

Big Mouth’s Supporting Cast

Big Mouth Season 3

An ensemble cast is often only as good as its supporting characters. After all, some solid sidekicks and B-plots are what elevate a series from being main character-focused to something broader and more far-reaching. When it comes to stand-out supporting characters, Big Mouth has them in spades, partially because of series stellar supporting voice cast, which features big-name actors, comedians, and other personalities.
