Ever since the flagship Game of Thrones series came to an end, HBO has been wanting to develop spinoff projects. Several spinoff projects have been in development over the years but only a couple have actually made it to production. House of the Dragon was the first big spinoff and it’s awaiting its second season. The other project that was officially announced was A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. There was also a prequel series starring Naomi Watts that shot a pilot episode that ended up being canceled.

Several other projects that have been mentioned over the years including Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow series have not really come to fruition, but HBO hasn’t stopped developing more Game of Thrones series. In fact, according to HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys, they always have scripts in development. He told TV Line:

“We always have Game of Thrones scripts in development. We greenlit Dunk and Egg in the spring. I wouldn’t say there is anything else in that world that is close to a green light or anything, but we are always working on different scripts and ideas.”

A couple of years ago, Bloys explained that the Game of Thrones spinoff concepts that would move forward would be the ones that have the strongest attributes:

“Obviously, we know George has this incredible world with all of this really rich and complicated history and all of these characters. So we’ve been trying to be thoughtful about what are the stories that are worth telling. What would be exciting? What would fans love?” he said. “Dunk and Egg is one of those, but not the only one.”

While there are no other Game of Thrones projects that are close to being greenlit, they are apparently always looking for the next one that will strike a chord with them. They’ve got two Game of Thrones series that they are actively developing and that should be enough until one of them comes to an end.
