As you know, Alison Brie is stepping into full-on supervillain territory as Evil-Lyn in the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie, and it sounds like she had an absolute blast doing it.

The upcoming live-action film, directed by Travis Knight, is set to hit theaters on June 5, and Brie couldn’t be more thrilled about diving into a role that let her stretch into something far more theatrical than her usual work.

“I watched a bunch of the old cartoon, and she really is like a classic femme fatale character, but with a sense of humor,” she told USA Today. “Just unlike anything I’ve ever really done.”

Brie built her career on grounded, character-driven performances in shows like Mad Men and Community, where subtlety and realism were key. Evil-Lyn, on the other hand, lives in a heightened world where everything is turned up to eleven.

“A lot of the work that I’ve done, everything is about reality,” she explained.

That’s exactly why this role hit differently for her. The world of Masters of the Universe leans fully into fantasy, spectacle, and larger-than-life personalities, giving Brie the chance to play in a completely different sandbox.

Brie said “the whole point” of the latest Masters of the Universe “is that everybody is larger than life − some people physically, this character more just in her evilness. It was so fun to work on, and the cast is great.”

The film features Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms, along with a stacked lineup of supporting characters pulled straight from the iconic franchise.

For Brie, the project also offered a refreshing change of pace after more intimate films like the horror thriller Together, where she starred opposite her husband Dave Franco. Jumping from indie storytelling into a massive fantasy epic gave her what she described as an “expanse into this new world,” and you can feel how much she appreciated that shift.

Evil-Lyn herself has a long legacy, originally voiced by Linda Gary in the classic 1980s cartoon and later brought to life by Meg Foster in the 1987 film. Now, Brie gets to put her own spin on the character, blending that classic femme fatale energy with a modern edge.

The story follows Prince Adam, who crash-landed on Earth as a child and grew up far from his home planet of Eternia. After rediscovering his Power Sword years later, he’s pulled back into a cosmic battle against Skeletor. To save Eternia, Adam must unlock his past and transform into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.

While He-Man’s journey sits at the center, it’s clear that characters like Evil-Lyn are going to bring a lot of flavor to the story. And if Brie’s enthusiasm is any indication, we’re getting a version of the character that’s playful, dangerous, and just a little bit unpredictable.
