‘Barbie‘ star Margot Robbie is seemingly killing any hopes for a sequel to the big box office hit, despite previously offering a promising update on the possibility of ‘Barbie 2.’

After taking over box offices all over the world, the blockbuster hit ‘Barbie‘ ended up making history by raking in a whopping $1 billion. While this was expected, as the film had been seeing huge numbers since its premiere on July 21, the Warner Bros film directed by Greta Gerwig was also met with some backlash.
Overseas in Lebanon, officials had taken steps to ban the popular film for allegedly promoting homosexuality. The country’s culture minister, Mohammad Mortada expressed concerns over the movie’s content, claiming that it contradicts religious and moral values.

Mortada had called upon Lebanon’s General Security agency to take action and prevent the screening of the film; a move which sparked a heated debate within the country, with some arguing for freedom of expression, and others emphasizing the importance of upholding traditional values.
The controversial views surrounding ‘Barbie‘ didn’t stop there. The film also faced criticism in Vietnam due to a controversial depiction of China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. But again, despite all of the negative attention, the Margot Robbie-led blockbuster achieved tremendous success at the box office, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

Before hitting $1 billion at the box office, fans quickly demanded a ‘Barbie‘ sequel, and speaking to the ‘Barbie 2‘ demands, Margot Robbie offered up a promising update on the possibility.
Speaking with Time in June, Robbie and Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz spoke to the fans about a potential sequel. While Kreiz was intrigued about the possibility of “more ‘Barbie‘ movies,” Robbie thought of all the “million different directions” the movie could go.

She wholly said, “It could go a million different directions from this point. But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.” Kreiz agreed and added, “We’re looking to create movies that become cultural events. If you can excite filmmakers like Greta [Gerwig] and Noah [Baumbach] to embrace the opportunity and have creative freedom, you can have a real impact.”
Since her initial comments, it appears as if Margot Robbie is now killing any hopes of a ‘Barbie‘ sequel. During a recent interview with AP Entertainment, Robbie was asked about her thoughts on a ‘Barbie 2,’ and she claimed that she and co-writer/director Greta Gerwig “didn’t build it to be a trilogy.”
Robbie wholly said, “I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. It was like Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
