On July 27, 1981, a child named Adam Walsh disappeared from a department store in Hollywood, Florida. The authorities initiated an extensive search operation and tried to find the young boy. However, two weeks later, police found his severed head in a drainage canal in rural Indian River County, Florida.

Reports indicated that the cause of Adam’s death was asphyxiation. The investigation into the case continued, and authorities eventually found that a man named Ottis Toole had abducted the young boy. Authorities called Toole for interrogation, and he initially confessed to Adam’s murder. But the police could not take him into custody after they lost all the evidence against him. Following this, the accused retracted his confession.

The case remained unsolved for almost two decades, and authorities charged no one. However, in 2008, police closed the case and named Ottis Toole as the killer. As per NBC News, Toole’s niece told Adam Walsh’s father, Josh Walsh, that Ottis Toole confessed on his deathbed that he murdered Adam. Police said that they had no new evidence, and after reviewing the entire case with precision, they concluded that Ottis Toole killed Adam Walsh. Surprisingly, the closure came 12 years after Toole had died in prison.

Although Ottis Toole received no punishment for the abduction and murder of Adam Walsh, authorities apprehended him for an unrelated arson incident. Later, the investigation revealed that Toole was responsible for the murder of George Sonnenberg. During the trial, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced him to death.

Later that year, Toole was found guilty of another murder and received a second death sentence. But things didn’t stop there and after his incarceration, the killer received four more death sentences in four different murder cases.

After spending almost 13 years in prison, 49-year-old Ottis Toole died of cirrhosis at the Florida State Prison. His death was devastating for the family of Adam Walsh, who wanted Toole to be tried for the young boy’s murder. But the police could never solve the case.

However, the case took a wild turn after the arrest of another serial killer named Henry Lee Lucas. The aforementioned killer noted that he and Toole committed several murders together. Initially, Toole denied any involvement but later went on to admit that both went on a killing spree together. Meanwhile, Lucas reportedly admitted in an interview that Ottis Toole confessed to him and took him to the mall from where he abducted Adam Walsh.

Walsh’s murder case established massive changes in law and order

The investigation in Walsh’s case faced much criticism from the young boy’s family. They believed the investigation was botched up. However, when the police closed the case and concluded Ottis Toole killed the little boy, they praised the authorities for giving them a proper closure.

After Adam’s death, his father, John Walsh, became an activist and helped in raising awareness about several aspects. Adam Walsh’s case became a national sensation and prompted significant changes in how police search for missing children. Additionally, the case forced the national legislators to establish a national center, toll-free helpline, and database solely dedicated missing children.

In 1983, NBC aired a TV movie Adam, which was based on the Adam Walsh murder case. Three years later, in September 1986, a sequel titled Adam: His Song Continues was released.
