Udal is a Malayalam horror and drama-thriller directed and produced by Ratheesh Raghunandan and Gokulam Gopalan, respectively. The film sees Dhyan Sreenivasan as Kiran, Indrans as Kuttichayan, and Durga Krishna as Shyni. Following its theatrical release on May 20, 2022, the movie is now set to make its digital premiere on an OTT platform.
The storyline of the movie revolves around Shyni, who looks after her bedridden mother-in-law while living with her father-in-law, Kuttichayan. Her husband lives away from home for work. Kiran is the only one with whom she spends her whole time. However, during Kiran’s visit one night, things take an unexpected turn, creating a chilling atmosphere within the house.
Udal is a treat for those who love dark thriller movies. Kuttichayan, the character of the father-in-law, is an old, skinny person who continues to incite fear among viewers throughout. Moreover, the sound effects and BGM used in the movies create an environment that anticipates the horror in the narrative. Although Udal was praised by the audience and received positive reviews, it failed to reach a large audience due to the language barrier.
When is Dhyan Sreenivasan’s Udal coming out?
As stated above, the movie garnered positive praise from the audience. However, despite the acclaim, the film received a rating of 7/10 on IMDb. After a year and a half since its theatrical release, Udal is now gearing up for its OTT premiere. Saina Play, which holds the OTT rights to the film, has officially confirmed its digital release. The platform further assured that the movie will soon be available for streaming.
Although initial reports suggested that Saina Play had not acquired the OTT rights for the Udal, the film is still expected to be featured on the Saina Play platform. While the exact release date has not been confirmed by the makers, it is anticipated to be available on the platform on New Year’s Eve or in the first week of January 2024.
The makers clarified that the delay in release was because they were planning to remake the film in other languages. Now, it will be interesting to see how the film performs on the OTT platform.
