Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things rounded out the top ten this weekend and American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios continued its slow burn with both films in the running for big awards at the Golden Globes tonight.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things starring Emma Stone grossed $2 million in week five on 750 screens for a cume of $14.2 million.

Poor Things has a raft of Globe noms for Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Director and Original Score and acting noms for Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo.

America Fiction by Cord Jefferson had a $1M+ weekend on 114 screens (up from 40) for a cume of $2.98 million. The film starring Jeffrey Wright is in week four, the latest this season to find success in a slow platform release. It’s up for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Male Actor for Wright.

The numbers show “positive word-of-mouth is percolating,” said Amazon MGM’s theatrical distribution chief Kevin Wilson, with American Fiction playing well in both “smarthouse” and commercial theaters. It expands nationally to 600 locations next week.

Fall festival audience awards “told us that audiences were embracing and championing” the film, he said, “and we’re seeing that play out in the theatrical marketplace.”

New specialty openings: Thriller Some Other Woman by Falling Forward Films, directed by Joel David Moore, debuted on 225 screens to $87k. Stars Amanda Crew, Ashley Greene, Tom Felton.

Mayhem! from IFC Films opened in 24 theaters at $6.8k. Directed by Xavier Gens, starring Nassim Lyes.

Other holdovers: The Boy And The Heron from GKids took in an estimated $1.72 million at 910 locations in week five for a cume of $39.6 million. Miyazaki’s latest is now the 4th highest grossing anime film of all time in North America behind Pokemon: The First Movie ($85.7 million, 1998), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train ($49.5 million, 2021) and Pokemon the Movie 2000 ($43.8 million, 2000).

Nominated for the Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score at the Golden Globes tonight. The score has also been shortlisted for the Oscar.

Sony Pictures Classics’ The Teacher’s Lounge grossed $13.2k on three screens in week two for a cume of $54k.

Also from SPC, Freud’s Last Session is seeing $17k on ten screens in week three for a cume of $91.5k.

Memory from Ketchup Entertainment grossed $65k on 14 screens in week three for a cume of $161k.

Music Box Films’ The Crime Is Mine, on four screens in week three, had a estimated gross of $7.1k and a cume of $34k.
