As rapper Lil Nas X enters into his “Christian Era,” professional boxer Ryan Garcia initially said he was “hurt” and “furious” over the rapper’s recent posts on social media. However, he later encouraged fans to not condemn him and instead pray for the rapper, who continues to face backlash for seemingly mocking religion.
A few months ago, Lil Nas X revealed that he was entering his “Christian era,” and telling fans that he was not trolling anyone, he was being for real. In November 2023, the Grammy Award-winning rapper shared a snippet of a new religious song on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Y’all mind if I enter my Christian era?”
In the video, the rapper performed part of an acoustic ballad while inside a parked car, and then he began dancing in a deserted traffic intersection while wearing a denim skirt and T-shirt that said: “If God doesn’t exist then who’s laughing at u.”

Social media immediately began reacting and most of the comments were calling the rapper out for mocking religion and trolling fans. However, the rapper denied the claims and told fans that this was not a gimmick. He said, “making christian music does not mean i can’t suck d*ck no more. the two are not mutually exclusive. i am allowed to get on my knees for multiple reasons.”
In another tweet, he said, “y’all see everything i do as a gimmick. when in reality im just an artist expressing myself in different ways. whether im a cowboy, gay, satanic, or now christian y’all find a problem! y’all don’t police nobody else art like mine. y’all hate me because im fun cute and petite.”

Since his November tweets, on Monday (January 8), Lil Nas X posted a video of him on the cross like Jesus Christ to promote his upcoming single “J Christ.” He said, “My new single is dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time!”
When the video dropped, along with a photo of him on the cross, it sent more shockwaves across the internet, causing him to respond to the backlash. He said, “the crazy thing is nowhere in the picture is a mockery of Jesus. Jesus’ image is used throughout history in people’s art all over the world. I’m not making fun of sh*t. y’all just gotta stop trying to gatekeep a religion that was here before any of us were even born. stfu (shut the f**k up).”

Then on Tuesday (January 9), Lil Nas X posted a video on TikTok of him dressed up like Jesus and partaking in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, which is the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. He filmed himself drinking wine (usually grape juice) and eating bread (wafers) offerings that are given to Catholic worshipers during Sunday Mass.
After setting the internet on fire with that video, he later posted on Instagram that he had been accepted to a Bible College. He posted what appeared to be an acceptance letter from Liberty University, congratulating him on being accepted for the Fall 2024 semester with a “Dual Concentration in Christian Leadership and Biblical Studies.”
The rapper captioned the post, “I know some of y’all hate me right now, but i want y’all to know i’m literally about to go to college for biblical studies in the fall. Not everything is a troll! Anyways IM A STUDENT AGAIN! LET’S GOOO.”

Along with the rest of the internet reacting to all of Lil Nas X’s recent posts, professional boxer Ryan Garcia spoke out. Taking to his X account (formerly Twitter), he tweeted and deleted, “Christian family where are you??? As someone who loves God and is a Christian, I find this one of the most disrespectful and disturbing things someone can do. Even if you aren’t Christian this isn’t okay I wouldn’t disrespect someone’s belief and I’m hurt and furious at the same time. More so hurt.”
In another tweet-and-delete about Lil Nas X seemingly mocking religion, Ryan Garcia wrote, “Pray for Lil Nas X. Although it may enrage Christians, what he is doing, we are called to pray for our adversaries. So lift him up in prayer so he can see what he is actually doing. Love God with all your heart, mind, and soul. Love one another.”
