Ava DuVernay recently expressed her joy at Angela Bassett’s well-deserved recognition at the Governors Awards. However, DuVernay also took the opportunity to clarify that this honor is separate from the highly esteemed Academy Awards, which will take place in two months. While winning an Oscar at the Governors Awards is undoubtedly a significant achievement, the pinnacle of every actor’s career is often considered to be receiving an Academy Award at the main event.

In an interview with TMZ in New York City, DuVernay made a clear distinction between the Governors Awards and the upcoming Academy Awards. She suggested that while celebrating Bassett’s long-awaited Oscar win is certainly in order, it is important to recognize that she has been snubbed in the past and truly deserves an actual Academy Award.

DuVernay’s admiration for Bassett’s talent was evident as she spoke about watching her perform on stage and being inspired by her acceptance speech. It is clear that DuVernay, like many others, believes that Bassett is long overdue for an acting Oscar.

Angela Bassett, on the other hand, expressed her excitement at being honored at the Governors Awards. She urged fellow Black actresses to reflect on the intentions of their ancestors and to remain courageous. Bassett paid tribute to the empowered women she has portrayed in her roles, including real-life figures like Tina Turner, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, and the fictional Queen Ramonda from “Wakanda.”

Overall, the recognition of Angela Bassett at the Governors Awards is a cause for celebration, but it is important to acknowledge the distinction between this honor and the coveted Academy Award.

During her speech she said, “This honor isn’t just for or about me. What I hope this moment means is that we are taking the necessary steps toward a future in which it is the norm, not the exception, to see and embrace one another’s full humanity, stories and perspectives. This must be our goal, and to always remember that there is room for us all. When we stand together, we win together.”

Both DuVernay and Bassett have left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, and their words and achievements continue to inspire aspiring actors and filmmakers alike.
