Director Gil Kenan is leading us into the next chapter of the Ghostbusters lore in the upcoming film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. What we know so far is that in the story, New York City finds itself freezing over due to an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force. Also, the original Ghostbusters return! Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson are all back for the new adventure! The synopsis reads:

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

But Kenan has given us a little more insight into the upcoming film, saying in a recent interview with Empire:

“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to center-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past. But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that’s thrilling as a storyteller, because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on.”

Kenan, who co-wrote and executive produced Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is directing the sequel, with Afterlife director and co-writer Jason Reitman serving as writer and executive producer. The movie also stars Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, comedian James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind have joined the cast! They join returning cast members Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace.

Nanjiani recently talked about the fact this this next film is “really, genuinely scary,” so it sounds like Kenan is going all the way in on his “all-new” and “terrifying” take on the next chapter of the story.
