It seems everyone is set to return for the next Mortal Kombat film. A new behind-the-scenes photo from the sequel’s production offers fans their first look at Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.
Much of the hype for the Mortal Kombat sequel stems from Karl Urban making his debut as the fan-favorite Johnny Cage. However, it seems Urban will be sharing the screen with quite a few characters from the original film, with a new BTS photo showing off Jessica McNamee’s return as Sonya Blade.
It’s no shock that Jessica McNamee would make her return in the sequel. On top of being one of the few to survive the last film, Sonya Blade is one of the most iconic characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Here’s to hoping the next BTS photo fans get reveals one of her iconic outfits that was left out of the first film!
The history of the Mortal Kombat series
The original Mortal Kombat movie, released in 1995, was a surprise hit and went on to become a cult classic. The 2021 reboot was similarly successful, grossing over $83 million worldwide despite being released during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mortal Kombat franchise has been a mainstay of the video game industry since the release of the first game in 1992. The series has spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and adaptations over the years, with each new entry introducing new characters, gameplay mechanics and storylines.
Fans of the Mortal Kombat series can look forward to the return of director Simon McQuoid for the upcoming sequel. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the 2019 Netflix series The Umbrella Academy and is also working on the new DC Universe with James Gunn, has been tapped to write the screenplay.
