Marlena Shaw, best known for her hit ‘California Soul’ has passed away, according to her daughter.
The American jazz, blues, and soul singer was 81 years of age.
She is known for her hit songs such as ‘California Soul’, ‘Woman of the Ghetto’, Go Away, Little Boy’, Yu-Ma / Go Away Little Boy’, Feel Like Makin’ Love,’ and more.
Marlena Shaw’s Daughter Says The Jazz Singer Passed Away ‘Peacefully’
“Hello everyone, it is with a very heavy heart that I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist, has passed away today,” Shaw’s daughter said in a Facebook video.
“She was peaceful. We were at peace. Our family again is at peace. She went very peacefully,” she added.
Verve Records spoke out following the news, sharing, “We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose ‘California Soul’ is as popular today as it ever was and whose album ‘It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St.’ helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987.”
The artist became popular in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to her soulful performances of ‘California Soul’ and ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love.’
