Kyle Richards opens up about her separation with Mauricio Umansky including going to therapy, having no prenup, and why divorce is an option.
Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards appears on SiriusXM’s Jeff Lewis Live where she got real about her marriage to Mauricio Umansky and their highly publicized separation.
During the interview, Kyle Richards and Jeff Lewis discuss her marital problems and the shifting family dynamics in her family amid her split from Mauricio.
To start, Kyle Richards admits that she and Mauricio are in therapy amid their separation. She also reveals that Mauricio didn’t want her discussing their marriage issues on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or in the press.
“So, I’ll tell you right now where we’re at. I mean, you know, we’re all in therapy now, which, you know, it makes it easier for me because also Mo did not want to say, so I was in a weird position,” Kyle tells Jeff.
Kyle explains that their four daughters finally convinced Mauricio that they had to publicly address their separation because it was “obvious” to everyone that something was going on in the marriage.
“He didn’t even want to when it came out that we were having a problem and I put that post on our Instagram. He didn’t want me to say that we’re having a problem and even my daughter said, “You can’t do that. It’s obvious,” and it’s a lot psychologically, you know?” she explains.
The 55-year-old also admits that she doesn’t “even know what life is without being with Mauricio. It’s hard and it’s painful and it’s scary.”
“We’ve been together, I mean, I’ve been married almost my entire adult life and like, I don’t even know what life is without being with Mauricio. It’s hard and it’s painful and it’s scary,” Kyle confesses.
She also admits that she didn’t want to open up about her marriage to her RHOBH co-stars especially when she knows nothing about their marriages and what goes on in their homes off camera.
“I’m having to answer to these women who I don’t know anything about their person. I have no idea what they do when they’re not on camera. I have no clue, but they want to know what’s happening in my bedroom. It’s not fair.”
Jeff then asks why Mauricio can’t or won’t go live at one of the other properties they own or simply go rent an apartment after Kyle confirms they are still living together, in different bedrooms.
“We fortunately are in the position where we have other homes,” Kyle explains. “He spent a lot of time in Aspen recently while I was here and then I went there for two weeks with our daughters and you know, if you didn’t know us, you would think everything was normal because, you know, I’m making dinner, we’re together, but we’re in different rooms and I have my house in LaQuinta, but no. It’s not like you go here, I go there.”
The former Flipping Out star then asks if it’s possible that Mauricio and Kyle could remain married but go from being a romantic couple to a “loving friendship.”
Jeff notes:
“It just could be a very loving, close companionship, friendship, whatever. I want to throw something else in too because we both have very wealthy friends. What I have found is sometimes when a wealthy couple with lots of assets and businesses, they don’t actually get divorced. They live separate lives because it’s complicated to divide everything. Is that ever, does that ever occur to you and Mauricio? Like, if this doesn’t work, do we actually get divorced and start splitting things up and try to sell businesses? I mean, that seems very complicated.”
Kyle confirms that her relationship with Mauricio “has changed form” but admits that if she and Mau aren’t going to be together she doesn’t want to remain married just because it would be less complicated for their vast fortune which including businesses, homes, etc.
“That sounds very difficult,” the RHOBH OG confirms. “That’s not what my main focus is. I mean, if we’re not going to be together, I would get divorced a hundred percent. I would not live like that.”
She continus, “I would [get a divorce] because psychologically, I would need to move on. I would never do that just for properties. You know, we did not have a prenup. My husband did not have a penny when I married him.”
The mom of four details how Mauricio wasn’t the wealthy man he is now when they met which is why comments that she’s only staying with him for his money irritate her to no end.
She explains how her mom and Mauricio’s grandparents helped them out with money during the early years of their marriage. Kyle notes that together she and Mauricio built the fortune that currently have.
“He was in the clothing business when I met him making no money and, you know, my mom lent us money when we were first married. There was one Christmas we didn’t have any money for Christmas presents, you know. My mom gave me money and then his grandparents helped us,” Kyle admits.
“So we built everything together and there’s no prenup. I love when people say, ‘Oh, Kyle’s just hanging.’ I love when I read these comments. ‘Kyle’s just hanging there for his money.’ Honey, he didn’t have any money when I married him and it’s our money and, you know, let’s be very clear about that. So, it’s very clean cut. It’s everything’s half regardless, so that’s not an issue for me and I mean, we would probably just keep our homes.”
“We don’t fight. We’re not a toxic couple. You never would see fighting in our home ever. I mean that seriously. I’m not just saying that. We were talking about this with my kids the other day, and they said,’ “We’ve literally never seen that. We see getting annoyed with each other, but never fighting. It was not about that.’ So, it would be we just go our separate ways and maybe keep the houses,” Kyle points out.
In conclusion Kyle notes that this season of her life is “tough” as she’s spent most of her life with Mauricio and their relationship is a huge part of her identity.
“It’s really tough. I do feel like my entire identity is being a wife and a mom and that’s been really hard to wrap my head around, you know, and that’s what I think part of my, you know, learning who I am without that even though obviously you’re, no matter what, I’m a mom. I have four daughters and they’re my best friends, but he’s also my friend and I do love him very much. That’s what’s also hard. If it was one of these situations where you’re like, “Oh, I can’t stand this guy.” This would be so easy for me. Of course. It would be very easy,” she confesses.
“I can guarantee you, I do not want to be in this position. I never wanted to be in this position. I thought I knew where I would be until the day I died, so that’s a lot to process,” she adds before admitting that “there were things” that caused issues in her and Mauricio’s marriage.
“There was things that we had, you know, kind of dealt with since the beginning of our marriage that you kind of put aside. Then they’d come up again and then you kind of get to a point where you’re like, “Well, are we still dealing with that?” and then, you know, were there things? Yes, of course. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be in this position I am today.”
