The first clip from Madame Web has been released, and it features Dakota Johnson’s Cassandra “Cassie” Webb rescuing three future Spider superheroes from the villain Ezekiel. She is able to do this when her psychic powers kick into high gear during a ride on the subway. It’s a pretty uninteresting scene, but that’s what the studio opted to share.
Johnson also appeared on The Tonight Show, where she reiterated that Madame Web is a “standalone” movie. Sony Pictures obviously wants people to know that.
On top of that, movie scooper @Cryptic4KQual offered some other details about what we might expect from the film and if Spider-Man is involved. It’s explained that Spider-Man is mentioned, but “not in the way you’d think.” The scooper then went on to call Sony a “disappointment.”
Oh! And as for the reason why Cassie’s mom was researching spiders in the Amazon before she died, she was apparently searching for a cure for a disease called Myasthenia Gravis. This is the same affliction that Madame Web suffers from in the comics, which leaves her blind and hooked up to a life support machine.
Then there’s Madame Web’s version of the Multiverse. That will be referred to as the “space-time network,” in the film, and the villain Ezekiel has the power to poison people with his touch.
The synopsis for the film reads: “In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures… if they can all survive a deadly present.”
Madame Web also stars Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon/Araña, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman,Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, Emma Roberts, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps (The Upshaws), and Adam Scott (Severance).
The film was directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones), and it will be released in theaters on February 14th.
