Oppenheimer prevailed in a pair of categories, while such features as Maestro, Spider-Man: Across the Universe and Society of the Snow also picked up prizes at the 71st Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards.

Hosted by Patton Oswalt, the MPSE ceremony was held Sunday at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles. Michael Dinner, known for his work as a director, writer and producer on projects including The Wonder Years, Chicago Hope and last year’s Justified: City Primeval, was honored with the MPSE Filmmaker Award. Additionally, Dane A. Davis (The Matrix) received the Career Achievement Award.

In the feature competition, winners included Oppenheimer, for dialogue and ADR, and also for effects and foley; Maestro, for music editing; Society of the Snow, for a foreign language film; and Spider-Man: Across the Universe, for theatrical animation. For nonfiction filmmaking, 32 Sounds prevailed for sound editing in a documentary, while Pianoforte was tops for music editing in a feature documentary.

“What makes this event so special is that we come together from around the world as a sound community to celebrate each other,” said newly elected MPSE president David Barber. “We celebrate each other’s artistry and each other’s achievements. MPSE members are an extraordinarily passionate and giving group of sound enthusiasts who exemplify the meaning of ‘community.’”

Also celebrating the craft was outgoing president Mark Lanza, who noted that the organization had recently hit a major milestone. “We are now over 1000 members strong,” Lanza said. “The MPSE is truly an international organization whose presence is felt and respected worldwide. This coupled with our push to include more gaming editors and events for them truly make the MPSE the premiere organization for sound editors.”
