Black Male Actors Who Have Yet To Take Home The Accolade

Fans applauded Laurence Fishburne‘s performance as Ike Turner in ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ They argued he deserved an Academy Award. The thespian received a nomination in 1994, but Tom Hanks won.

Fans also advocated for Samuel L. Jackson and his portrayal in the pop culture phenomenon, ‘Pulp Fiction.’  The actor received a Best Supporting Actor nom but didn’t take home the victory. He was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2021.

Derek Luke‘s 2002 performance in ‘Antwone Fisher’ was deserving of a nomination. However, he was overlooked but did gain notoriety and respect in the acting world.

Michael Clarke Duncan‘s portrayal of the gentle giant John Coffey in the 2000 film, ‘The Green Mile,’ received an Oscar nomination, but he did not take the award home.

Furthermore, Don Cheadle received a Best Actor nomination for his role in the 2004 movie ‘Hotel Rwanda,’ but lost to actor-comedian Jamie Foxx.

Black Female Actors Who Have Yet To Take Home The Accolade

Angela Bassett‘s portrayal of Tina Turner in the 1993 film ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ was one for the books. The legendary actress was nominated for an Oscar the following year. She lost to Holly Hunter. As previously reported, she received an Honorary Oscar in January 2024.

Additionally, Oprah‘s embodiment of the character Miss Sophia in ‘The Color Purple’ showcased her acting chops to the world. The Academy nominated the mogul for the award. However, Anjelica Huston walked away with the trophy.
