If you’re wondering what happened to Auston Matthews and why he was removed from Game 4 of Saturday’s match against the Boston Bruins, this article provides what’s known so far about Matthew’s illness.

What Happened to Auston Matthews?

The Toronto Maple Leafs stood in a losing position in the game, following their back-to-back losses in Game 3 and Game 4. Auston Matthews has not been able to give his best due to illness. Despite being unwell, he didn’t give up and played Game 3, but unfortunately, the luck wasn’t in the team’s favor, and they lost 4-2 in their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

In the early stages of Game 4, his coach pulled him out of the game for good. This move stirred conversation among devoted fans, and head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on why the arguably best player was made to leave. He said, “It’s all just related to the illness he’s been dealing with. Ultimately, he’s been giving us everything that he has here. Ultimately, the doctor pulled him.”

Why Didn’t Auston Matthews Play Game 5 Against the Bruins?

Auston Matthews, a top force from the Maple Leafs, carried the team through in their Game Two match against the Bruins and came out victorious. After a disappointing loss in Game 3, Matthews was just present in the first half of Game 4 but later withdrew due to the doctor’s instructions. He didn’t play Game 5 against the Bruins either, as his “lingering illness” continued to worsen.

Matthews’ illness remains a mystery, but whatever it is, a decline in his performance was potentially witnessable on the ice.

Despite Matthew’s absence from Game 5, the team had a strategic line-up plan, with Maxi Domi replacing Matthews, followed by William Nylander, who went second. The Maple Leafs returned to form by ditching elimination and coming out triumphant against the Bruins in Game 5.
