In last Thursday’s episode we were once again reminded that the show might be called “Young Sheldon”, but it is still very much an ensemble show. In fact, Sheldon barely even had any screentime as the episode’s spotlight was set on Connie aka everyone’s favorite Meemaw who recently has been busted for running an illegal gambling room and is now forced to face the consequences for her business venture.

Facing 180 hours of community service to avoid jail, Connie is determined to evade this obligation and goes to great lengths to achieve her goal. What she did not expect, however is that her fierce probation officer (portrayed by the great Octavia Spencer) sees right through her schemes and has no intention of making things easy for her. Connie finds herself cornered when her daughter refuses to help and when also George’s halfhearted attempt to intervene fails. “Community Service and the Key to a Happy Marriage” – YOUNG SHELSON, Pictured: Annie Potts and Octavia Spencer. At various points in the episode, one might question whether Connie’s resistance is actually worth the trouble, given that her assignment is to simply organize the family’s church donation room. While the space is certainly huge and rather messy, it is arguably a more favorable task compared to pretty much any other alternative her probation officer could have assigned.

Despite Mary initially accusing Connie of thinking she’s above the law, she eventually chooses to lend a helping hand to her mother. However, she does not let her off the hook, instead she ensures that Connie receives support from both herself and Sheldon, who eagerly takes on the challenge of organizing the chaos. It may be a daunting task for Connie but for Sheldon tackling chaos is more exciting than a trip to Disneyland for most people.

While Annie Potts’ performance shone (she is always an absolute delight) the episode itself felt somewhat underwhelming. It certainly offered several good laughs, but it very much was a filler episode without any significant plot advancement. Considering that the show is about to end it was surprising that one of the show’s final episodes seemingly has no relevance to the series finale.

The second storyline in the episode explored the ongoing disagreement between Mandy and her mother over how to raise little CeeCee, leaving Georgie questioning which woman’s approach is actually the right one. Jim advises Georgie to take a diplomatic approach by simply agreeing with both women, but ultimately, the young father decides to side with his wife – a wise choice indeed.

This subplot also barely contributed to moving along the overall storyline and could almost be considered unnecessary, especially given that Georgie and Mandy are slated to have their own spin-off where there will be ample opportunity to delve deeper into their family dynamics.

What did you think about the episode? And how do you feel about the series finale being just around the corner? Let us know in the comments below!
