X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg is in talks to develop and produce a Star Trek prequel film for Paramount Pictures.
The project has already been in development at the studio for awhile. Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) has been working on the screenplay and Toby Haynes (Andor, Black Mirror: USS Callister) is on board to direct.
All we know about the film so far is that it will tell an origin story for the “main timeline of the Star Trek franchise (rather than the alternate, Kelvin timeline started with 2009’s Star Trek), set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.”
This should be an interesting story to tell and I’m curious to see what comes of it, if it actually ends up getting made. As you know, Paramount has had a rough time getting a new Star Trek film off the ground. I’m sure they’ll eventually get it together one day, though.
The studio has been trying to get a Star Trek 4 movie made for years. This film is a different project from Star Trek 4, which is still in active development. It’s said that will be “the final chapter in that main series.”
Maybe Kingberg will be able to steer this thing in the right direction and push it forward. J.J. Abrams’ is a producer on the project as well, but he hasn’t been able to do much with it.
