We’ve got a new photo to share with you for director Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus, and in a recent interview with Empire, the filmmaker offered some more insight into the film.

Álvarez first explained that his film is a hybrid of Alien and Aliens saying: “To ask an Alien fan to choose between them is a perverse question. So I thought, ‘How do I do both?’”

He went on to offer an example, saying: “There’s a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo. Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You’re in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [from Aliens].”

The director previously explained that he worked closely with James Cameron and Ridley Scott when developing this movie, so it makes sense that the film would have a good mix of those two movies.

He went on to offer some additional story details regarding Cailee Spaeny’s Rain and David Jonsson as her android foster brother Andy, who are featured in the new photo above.

Álvarez said: “When her father was dying, he left Andy to be a kind of caretaker. But Andy is a bit damaged and he’s an older model. So more than a surrogate father, he becomes a younger brother to her.

He went on to say: “That was always the heart of the story: this relationship between the two… and how that relationship unfolds once shit hits the fan.”

Alien: Romulus follows a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

The pitch that Alvarez initially made is said to be a “really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.” The movie is also going to be terrifying as it leans into the horror aspect of the franchise. That’s why I’m excited!

The story is set between Ridley Scott’s Alien and Cameron’s Aliens and the same team that worked on Aliens returned to work on this movie.

The movie also stars Isabela Merced, who is also joined by Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and newcomer Aileen Wu.

Alvarez is directing from his script written by Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott is also a producer on the movie along with Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) for Scott Free, with Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) and Tom Moran (The Donut King) serving as executive producers.

Alien: Romulus is set to hit theaters on August 16th.
