The Veronicas appear in our Summer 2024 Issue with cover stars Wallows, Drain, Maya Hawke, the Linda Lindas, and Winnetka Bowling League, where one-half of the duo, Jessica Origliasso, told us about her all-time favorite queer anthems in honor of Pride Month. From K.D. Lang’s groundbreaking ’90s hit to modern heroes like Robyn and Chappell Roan, check out her picks below.

t.A.T.u. – “All the Things She Said”

This song was a queer awakening for a lot of people! One of my favorite songs of all time. It perfectly expresses the confusion and panic you feel when you first fall in love with someone of the same sex.

LP – “Lost on You”

Been obsessed with LP since we heard demos of hers back in the mid-2000s. “Lost on You” captures the weeks of questioning and regret that feels all too familiar in sapphic breakups.

Hemming – “I’ll Never Be the Man for You”

Hemming is a fairly unknown artist, but I heard this song years ago, and it stayed with me. I think she perfectly captures the desperation every girl who has fallen in love with a straight girl has felt at some point.

Carla Wehbe – “Everything I’m Not”

Carla is my favorite up-and-coming queer artist. She covered one of our songs, and we became obsessed. We’ve heard the new music coming, and it’s incredible. This emo cowboy cover of our song “Everything I’m Not” is so queer-coded.

Peaches – “Boys Wanna Be Her”

I was hugely influenced by Peaches’ music and fearless spirit growing up. All queer creative artists and allies before 2015 — when marriage equality only first started to be passed in multiple Western countries — had this brave, true punk spirit that was important on a fundamental level for the LGBTQ community.

Lesley Gore – “You Don’t Own Me”

A lesbian and feminist icon of the ’60s. This is one of the greatest songs of all time.

Chappell Roan – “Good Luck, Babe!”

Obsessed with Chappell Roan, her brilliant pop songs, and this salty song.

Robyn – “Dancing on My Own”

What queer hasn’t related and cried on the dance floor to this song?

WILLOW – “Wait a Minute!”

I love this song. It reminds me of what it feels like when you’re first coming out and making mistakes, sometimes hurting people, and learning to just be present and kind to yourself on your journey.

K.D. Lang – “Sexuality”

My No. 1 most important artist of all time. Witnessing an out-and-proud lesbian create a career in music that inevitably opened people’s minds to love and tolerance through a mainstream love for her talent showed me that music and art are a universal language — and could be a safe space to live your truth, even when the rest of the world hadn’t caught up yet.
