There’s joy in toon town today as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing animated movie ever at the worldwide box office. With $1,462.8M through Tuesday, the sequel has surpassed Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen II ($1.454B). Disney has seven of the Top 10 animated movies ever globally, five of which are from Pixar.

Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 has also moved up the overall all-time global chart, now at No. 13, behind Top Gun: Maverick, and having surpassed Barbie ($1.446B) on Monday.

The current international box office cume through Tuesday is $861.8M, landing it at No. 20 on the all-time overseas chart. IO2 still has Japan to release, on August 1.

IO2 has been on a tear since it began offshore rollout on June 12, and domestic on June 14. At the time, the launch weekend logged the biggest opening for an animated movie worldwide at $295M (when using current exchange rates and in like-for-like markets).

In short order, it topped the $1B global milestone, getting there in just 19 days — the quickest time to the mark for an animated movie ever. In early July, IO2 became Pixar’s highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.

It is also the overall No. 1 film in industry history in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Uruguay.

The Top 5 overseas markets through Tuesday are: Mexico ($98.6M), Brazil ($73.9M), UK ($61.2M), Korea ($56.5M) and France ($52.3M).

As we have previously noted, Disney’s 2019 The Lion King is not considered an animated film by the studio which made it under the Disney Live Action umbrella, rather than either of its animated labels.
