Minnie Driver will voice a female version of the Penguin in Batman: Caped Crusader.

Batman: Caped Crusader is an upcoming DC animated series that is premiering on Amazon Prime Video this coming August.

Per Variety, Driver has been cast as a gender-swapped version of the notorious Dark Knight villain. She will be named Oswalda Cobblepot in the series, which will see Hamish Linklater voice Bruce Wayne/Batman.

“If we’re lucky enough to be invited onto the stage to inhabit these characters that already exist in the ether, we just sort of rise up to meet them,” Driver said of Oswalda at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. “And this was such a beautiful retelling of that villain. It was joyful. And, I mean, she’s dreadful.”

What is Batman: Caped Crusader about?

“It is an all-new animated series and reimagining of the Batman mythology,” reads the logline. “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent the character and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences, all set in a visually striking world.”

Batman: Caped Crusader comes from executive producers Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series), J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), and Matt Reeves (The Batman).

The voice cast also includes Diedrich Bader, Christina Ricci, Mckenna Grace, Eric Morgan Stuart, Michelle C. Bonilla, Krystal Joy Brown, John DiMaggio, Paul Scheer, Reid Scott, Tom Kenny, Jason Watkins, Gary Anthony Williams, Dan Donohue, David Krumholtz, Haley Joel Osment, and Toby Stephens.

Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich, and Sam Register also serve as executive producers on Batman: Caped Crusader, which was originally developed for Max before Amazon MGM Studios picked it up for a two-season order in March 2023.

Batman: Caped Crusader premieres on Prime Video on August 1, 2024.
