Past is prologue in the case of ZOCASE, Mat Zo’s new Anjunabeats EP, a veritable showcase of his unflinching willingness to produce electronic music that defies.
Zo is one of the most celebrated artists on Above & Beyond’s illustrious electronic label, which released his debut album, Damage Control, back in 2013. That record featured “Easy,” a collaboration with Porter Robinson that remains a generational dance anthem.
True to form, ZOCASE is not background noise for the faint-hearted—it’s a full-contact sport for the ears, a labyrinth where each track stretches beyond the eight-minute mark. He weaves a cocoon of vintage electro and techno in these songs, each of which is a miniature universe unto itself.
Fans of Zo know the beauty of his music lies in its details. He kicks off with “Relic of the Future,” where his mastery of sound design shines with textured, propulsive production. One moment you’re floating through cosmic synth leads, the next you’re thrust into a centrifuge of gritty electro.
The producer’s meticulous attention to stereo imaging and frequency spectrum manipulation is clear in the ensuing “Bluish Yellow,” a lysergic, soaring track that could soundtrack a woozy drive out of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Here, complex arrangements and dynamic builds culminate in cathartic progressive house drops. He then closes ZOCASE with “This Too Shall Pass,” a glitchy techno floor-filler with energy that refuses to relent until its atmospheric coda.
The EP takes its name from Zo’s audiovisual concept “ZOCASE,” which he debuted at Aures London back on June 29th, 2023 before touring the show across North America. He’s now set for a momentous showcase at New York City’s famed Irving Plaza on December 6th.
