In her new posthumous book, ‘From Here to the Great Unknown,’ released on Tuesday (October 8), Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley, recalls her whirlwind relationship and marriage to Michael Jackson. The two first met in 1975, when Presley, a fan of Jackson, was 7 years old. Jackson, the youngest of the Jackson Five musical group, had gone to one of the group’s shows in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Jackson would later cross paths again 17 years later. In 1992, the future couple started an adult friendship and then got married two years later in May 1994 when Presley was 25 and Jackson was 35. Their marriage occurred just weeks after Presley’s divorce from her first husband Danny Keough, with whom she welcomed two children: a daughter Riley Keough, and their late son Benjamin Keough. Presley also welcomed two daughters, Harper Vivienne Ann Lockwood and Finley Aaron Love Lockwood with her fourth husband, Michael Lockwood. She was also married to Nicholas Cage, being her third husband.

In 1993, Jackson was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy, a claim that Presley reportedly believed to be false. Believing her husband was innocent, she urged him to settle the allegations outside of court and to go to rehab for his alleged drug addiction. However, Presley later denied knowledge of Jackson’s alleged drug use during their marriage. In December 1995, the couple separated and filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences,” with their divorce being finalized in August 1996. According to Presley, the two were still together on and off for four years following their divorce.
In 2009, after Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest at 50 in June, Lisa Marie Presley admitted in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that she had felt manipulated by him in their marriage, but that any feelings of bitterness for him had died with him. She said, “When we were together, we were really in love, and then we had the rough patches.” In January 2023, Presley died at 54 of a small bowel obstruction, a long-term complication from bariatric surgery she underwent several years ago.

Following Lisa Marie Presley’s passing, her daughter, Riley Keough, completed her mother’s memoir by listening to tapes of memories her mother left behind. 35-year-old Keough told PEOPLE, “Because my mother was Elvis Presley’s daughter, she was constantly talked about, argued over, and dissected.”
She continued, “What she wanted to do in her memoir, and what I hope I’ve done in finishing it for her, is to go beneath the magazine headline idea of her and reveal the core of who she was. To turn her into a three-dimensional human being: the best mother, a wild child, a fierce friend, an underrated artist, frank, funny, traumatized, joyous, grieving, everything that she was throughout her remarkable life. I want to give voice to my mother in a way that eluded her while she was alive.”
Keough added, “I hope that in an extraordinary circumstance, people relate to a very human experience of love, heartbreak, loss, addiction, and family. [My mom] wanted to write a book in the hopes that someone could read her story and relate to her, to know that they’re not alone in the world. Her hope with this book was just human connection. So that’s mine.”

According to her memoir, Presley was still married to her first husband, Danny Keough, but they split after Michael Jackson confessed his love to her during a trip they took to Las Vegas. After the revelation in Sin City, Presley left Keough and got with Jackson.
Presley wrote in her memoir, “Michael said,’ I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m completely in love with you. I want us to get married and for you to have my children.’ I didn’t say anything immediately, but then I said, ‘I’m really flattered, I can’t even talk.’ By then, I felt I was in love with him too.”
In her memoir, Lisa Marie Presley revealed that when she became romantically involved with Michael Jackson, “He told me he was still a virgin. I think he had kissed Tatum O’Neal, and he’d had a thing with Brooke Shields, which hadn’t been physical apart from a kiss. He said Madonna had tried to hook up with him once, too, but nothing happened. I was terrified because I didn’t want to make the wrong move.”
