I love a good, entertaining family horror movie, and Monster Summer is an absolute blast! This film takes audiences on a fun, thrilling ride that’s perfect for the whole family to enjoy together.

If you’re a fan of films like Monster House, The ‘Burbs, or The Watcher in the Woods, you’ll definitely get a kick out of this one.

Monster Summer blends a nostalgic sense of childhood adventure with just the right amount of supernatural chills, making it a standout in its genre.

The story centers around a group of kids, led by Noah, who find their summer vacation taking a dark turn when a mysterious force begins to disrupt their idyllic island fun.

They team up with a retired police detective, played Mel Gibson, to embark on a monstrous adventure to save their home. Their mission? To stop a witch from feasting on the souls of children.

While there are some dark moments in the flilm where the story takes some creepy turns, it’s balanced out by a heartfelt journey that brings both laughs and warm, sentimental moments.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is its ability to deliver a solid, engaging story while introducing us to a group of characters that are incredibly likable. You can’t help but root for Noah and his gang as they are one their journey.

The film is filled with nostalgic vibes, especially in how it captures the essence of childhood summers… the freedom, the mischief, and the feeling that anything is possible. But, of course, in this case, it all comes with a supernatural twist that keeps things fresh and exciting.

I was especially impressed with the direction from David Henrie (Wizards of Waverly Place). He clearly has a love for classic storytelling, and you can feel the influence of fairy tales and old-school monster movies throughout.

Henrie has talked about the film’s themes, saying, “Historically, fairy tales used monsters to personify our deepest fears while empowering young people to overcome them. Now more than ever, we need narratives that inspire courage in the face of darkness.”

That’s exactly what Monster Summer achieves—it’s a throwback to the kind of storytelling that’s both empowering and magical.

Unfortunately, Monster Summer only has a limited theatrical release right now, which is a shame because it’s one of the better films in theaters at the moment. If you can catch it on the big screen, I highly recommend it. it’s a perfect movie for families who enjoy a bit of spookiness.

But if you miss it, definitely keep an eye out for it when it hits VOD. This is one movie you don’t want to overlook.

The cast also includes Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Lorraine Bracco (Goodfellas, The Sopranos), Nora Zehetner (The Right Stuff), Noah Cottrell (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Abby James Witherspoon (Secret Headquarters), Lilah Pate (Outer Banks), Julian Lerner (The Wonder Years), and Patrick Renna (The Sandlot).

Monster Summer is a fun, heartfelt, and spooky family adventure that hits all the right notes. It’s a film that taps into the magic and nostalgia of childhood, while also delivering just enough supernatural thrills to keep you on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss out on this one, t’s a monstrous good time!
