This week’s retro trailer is for the 1972 psychological horror film The Other directed by Robert Mulligan, and based on the novel by Tom Tryon.
Set in rural Connecticut during the 1930s, the film follows identical twins Niles and Holland Perry, whose bond seems unbreakable. However, after a series of strange and tragic events occur in their family and community, it becomes clear that one of the boys is not what he seems.
Niles, the more sensitive and introspective of the two, often communicates with the spirit of his deceased father through a telepathic game taught by his Russian grandmother.
This “game” takes on sinister undertones as Niles begins to blur the lines between reality and imagination, under the influence of his seemingly mischievous and malevolent brother, Holland.
The twist reveals that Holland died in an accident some time ago, and Niles has been projecting his brother’s personality, carrying out dark deeds in Holland’s name.
The film is a slow-burn exploration of madness.
