In a conversation with SpoilerTV, Morgan Kohan, who plays Maggie on Sullivan’s Crossing, took a deep dive into her character’s transformative journey in the show’s latest season. Airing on CTV in Canada and The CW in the United States, the series has quickly garnered fans on both sides of the border. With themes of redemption, reconciliation, and the ripple effects of trauma, Sullivan’s Crossing captures a rare balance of hardship and hope.

When discussing her role, Kohan shared that Maggie’s journey—her search for identity and meaning—was a significant draw for her. “We’re all just trying to figure out who we are and what we want out of life and the people who surround us. That’s me. That’s my friends,” Kohan said. Her approach to embodying Maggie’s emotional turmoil is equally heartfelt; she invests time with a coach and journals Maggie’s untold thoughts, “filling in the gaps” to create the intricate portrait fans have come to know and love.

Season 2 has tested Maggie more than ever. Kohan hinted at the profound weight Maggie carries, saying, “Season two’s a heavy one for her.” With each episode, Maggie’s struggles pile up, leaving viewers wondering if she will ever catch a break. Kohan also touched on Maggie’s evolution since Season 1, noting that Maggie is learning to trust herself and more carefully considering whose advice she takes to heart.

One of the show’s central themes is Maggie’s complicated relationship with her father, Sully. While the two strive to mend their fractured bond, Kohan explained that forgiveness doesn’t erase years of absence and unresolved pain, “I think it’s one of those things that you can forgive, but you don’t necessarily forget. Those things are still there. Those years of not speaking, not feeling his presence, are still there. So I think she is definitely trying to just move forward, and I think we all want that for both of them too, but you can’t change the past.”

Another facet that keeps fans invested is the complex romance between Maggie and Cal. The chemistry between Kohan and Chad Michael Murray, who plays Cal, is evident on screen. Kohan credits their “trust” and “collaborative” friendship as the foundation for this dynamic, describing how they challenge each other and bring fresh energy to every scene, “we’ve just become really good friends. So I think that the trust is there and you’re working with a buddy and we’ve now worked together for two seasons now. You get excited about what the other person is going to bring to it, and we talk together it’s very collaborative and Chad’s a really wonderful scene partner, too.” Cal, Kohan believes, allows Maggie to explore a softer side, something she’s rarely shown due to her usual guarded nature. Kohan shared that Cal brings out a unique vulnerability in Maggie, providing her with a safety net she’s never had before. “I think he brings out a softness in her. I think she hasn’t been able to explore that side of herself before because she’s always been in control and had nobody else to rely on and trust to protect her in the same kind of way and I think Cal sees her and is such a steady person that it kind of lets her be soft.”

One of Maggie’s defining traits is her tendency to build walls, a survival mechanism that sometimes shuts people out, including Cal. A pivotal scene in Season 2 sees Cal confronting Maggie about these barriers, a moment Kohan described as “never easy to hear, especially from someone you care about.” This scene, and Maggie’s emotional breakdown afterward, offered viewers a glimpse into the depth of her struggle with self-protection versus vulnerability.

The cast of Sullivan’s Crossing shares an on-screen chemistry that feels natural and effortless, something Kohan attributes to the close-knit environment they’ve built while filming two seasons in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She believes that Halifax itself adds an essential “character” to the show, bringing a rich atmosphere that’s inseparable from the show’s storyline. Kohan beams about Nova Scotia, “It’s just so beautiful. I can’t talk about it enough. I feel like the landscape adds to the show in so many different ways, too. It kind of feels like it’s a character in the show and I don’t think it would be the same if it was filmed somewhere else. It is just very special.”

Fans of the show know Sullivan’s Crossing is never short on cliffhangers, and Kohan admitted that she experiences the same shock and anticipation as viewers when reading new scripts. Without giving away spoilers, she teased that episodes six and seven mark a turning point for Maggie that shifts her path in a surprising direction. With only a handful of episodes left, the stakes are higher than ever. As for what Morgan can tease for American fans about the back half of the season, she replied, “I mean, the cliffhangers don’t stop. The season two cliffhanger is wild. [Episodes] six and seven, I feel, are a real turning point for Maggie in a lot of aspects, I think, and completely shifts her trajectory a little bit.” As for the rest of the characters? “We get to explore different people’s family and background a little bit more, too. So, that’s very cool as well.”

As for what she hopes for Maggie’s future, Kohan wishes her character a sense of peace and clarity, she explained “I hope she find a peace and a settling in her decisions of life. What she wants from her life, where she wants to be and who she wants to be surrounded by. I just want a settling for her.” Maggie’s past choices and career in neurosurgery, Kohan believes, reflect both her genuine passion and her stepfather’s influence, showing that Maggie is still discovering what’s truly hers versus what was expected of her.

As Sullivan’s Crossing continues, viewers can expect more twists, emotional turns, and an evolving Maggie who resonates with so many navigating their own complexities. Kohan’s portrayal and dedication to the role promise a thrilling ride through the rest of the season. With cliffhangers galore, fans are undoubtedly in for a memorable journey as they root for Maggie to find her way, peace, and maybe even love.

Episode six of season 2 airs tonight on The CW at 8:00 p.m. EST/7:00 p.m. CST.
