Gerard Johnstone, Director of the ‘M3GAN’ Movies, Signs with UTA

One of the things Dwayne Johnson is known for is his muscular physique and after refusing to wear a body suit in his Black Adam movie, I thought he was dead set against ever wearing a bodysuit.

But, in order to play the larger-than-life demigod Maui in the upcoming live-action Moana, he is going to wear a bodysuit.

After photos from the set leaked, I thought it was pretty clear that Johnson was wearing a suit to enhance his size, and during a recent interview with Extra, he confirmed it.

Johnson said: “That’s a suit that took a long time to put on. So, I’m so happy you said, ‘You bulked up,’ because when you say, ‘You bulked up,’ that means you couldn’t tell.”

When talking about putting the suit on, the actor said: “That is a couple of hours every day of transforming, putting that on.”

He then talked about the photos leaking from the set, saying: “We shot outside and when those pictures surfaced, I was like, ‘Shit, we got caught,’ cause we were putting up, like, walls so there was no paparazzi. But they got into boats and started shooting pictures.”

The live-action version of Moana is being directed by Thomas Kail, who helmed Hamilton on Broadway and Disney+, Grease Live , Fosse/Verdon, and the first and last episodes of Hulu’s lauded limited series We Were the Lucky Ones.

The story is inspired by Polynesian myths, Moana told the story of a young woman who disobeys her father, the chief of an island that is dealing with an impending ecological disaster and goes off on a quest to reunite a mystical relic with its owner, a goddess named Te Fiti.

Along the way, she releases Maui from his island prison, is captured by a monstrous crab, and finds the strength to become the chief her father believed she could be.

The live-action Moana is set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.
